Full-time: Hamburg 4-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Hamburg celebrate a thoroughly deserved home victory against Fortuna Düsseldorf thanks to goals from Muheim, Selke, Karabec and Stange that see them remain unbeaten at the Volksparkstadion this season. The visitors were inferior in Hamburg for almost the entire match, but managed to equalise through Kownacki and remained dangerous in a few counter-attacking moments. In the end, Fortuna couldn't muster enough to counter the attacking power of Hamburg, who jump to the top of the Bundesliga 2 table.

4-1! That seals it!
Hamburg seal the convincing win as the youngster gets to celebrate. Hefti wins back a ball at the right corner of the penalty area and serves Stange with a short pass. With two quick steps, the 18-year-old moves into the box and fires a powerful shot into the near corner. The ball hits the near post and goes in.

What a chance!
Fortuna really get another top chance for a consolation goal. But with a clear shot at Heuer Fernandes, Vermeij completely miscues it, and the ball sails well over the bar from close range.

Karabec misses
The home side attack down the right flank. Karabec tries to cleverly place a low cross into the near corner with a quick touch. But the scorer of the third goal doesn't connect properly with the ball, and Kastenmeier is there to collect.

Well cleared
Mikelbrencis calmly clears a low cross from the left flank into touch. The Hamburg player is making a very solid impression at the back.

What now, Fortuna?
The visitors have about 20 minutes left, having been on the verge of working out an equaliser. As it stands, Düsseldorf will be seven points behind Hamburg in the table, which would be a big setback to their promotion hopes.

Suspension for Selke
The Hamburg strike star received a yellow card after a dispute with Hoffmann. It's his fifth booking of the season, meaning he will miss Hamburg's next match.

3-1 to Hamburg!
Just when Düsseldorf were becoming better and more dangerous, Hamburg score to make it 3-1. Karabec takes heart from the edge of the penalty area and hammers the ball low against the left post. Kastenmeier dives and tries to reach it, but it rebounds off the post onto his back. From there, the ball goes into the net for 3-1.
64'
Fortuna threat
In the second half, the visitors have already had as many shots on goal as they did before the break (three each). Düsseldorf are becoming bolder.
62'
Kastenmeier having a blinder
The Fortuna goalkeeper is almost single-handedly keeping his team in the game, having already saved five shots, some of them spectacularly.
60'
Two big chances!
Zimmermann breaks through on the left side and is perfectly set up in the penalty area. The Fortuna player lays the ball off impeccably to the centre for Pejčinović, who curls the ball just wide of the left post. Shortly after, the striker heads a cross narrowly past the right post as well. The visitors are working their way back into this!
57'
What a chance!
At the other end, the equaliser almost comes completely against the run of play. The visitors win the ball in midfield and Kownacki serves Jóhannesson perfectly. The midfielder lifts his head and sees that Heuer Fernandes is standing far too far in front of his goal. He tries to find the empty net from 40 metres out but misses by some distance. What a chance for Fortuna!
56'
Kastenmeier yet again!
The Fortuna goalkeeper has been by far the best player on his team and makes another excellent save in the 56th minute, blocking a close-range shot with his foot against the completely unmarked Mikelbrencis. Brilliant from Kastenmeier, without whom the score could be 5-1.

After some good pressure on the right flank, Hamburg get another corner. It's already the seventh set-piece for Hamburg that is whipped in from the side. This time, however, the referee blows for a foul by the attacking player.

Again down the left
As in the first half, Hamburg are immediately active down the left side in the second half, where Dompé and Muheim are creating a lot of pressure and win the first corner of the second period.

Half-time: Hamburg 2-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Hamburg are deservedly in front at the break in the high-profile Saturday evening clash. The visitors had one dangerous attack on the Hamburg goal and promptly equalised through Kownacki. Before and after that, however, the hosts were in complete control of the match and could be leading by an even wider margin.

Düsseldorf want to draw level
Similar to their reaction after conceding the early goal, Fortuna try to deliver a prompt response after falling 1-2 down - winning a corner.
40'
Selke scores
The Hamburg centre-forward nods in a perfect corner from Dompé at the near post, and sends it unstoppably past Kastenmeier and into the back of the net. Brilliantly done by Selke!
38'
Kastenmeier saves again
The Fortuna goalkeeper defuses a thunderbolt from Karabec with a brilliant diving save. Hamburg have a corner.
37'
Fortuna threaten
Fortuna quickly switch play after winning the ball just before the halfway line. Once again, they try to move it quickly to the forwards, but this time the Hamburg defence is alert. Nevertheless, the visitors' counter-attacking moments are dangerous.
35'
Numbers in Hamburg's favour
The hosts not only have significantly more possession - still 70 percent after 30 minutes - but are also doing better in challenges. 62 percent of the direct duels have been won by Hamburg, who are performing very well, so far.
33'
Offensive power
Ball after ball is landing in the visitors' penalty area, who can hardly gain any relief from the Hamburg onslaught. So far - with the exception of the equaliser - it has been a one-way game.
29'
Sensational save!
The visitors' goalkeeper prevents a near certain goal with a daring save in his own six-yard box against Selke. From a ball from the left side, Kastenmeier leaps with an outstretched hand towards Selke and gets to the ball just before the Hamburg striker. Sahiti sends the rebound over the crossbar with a bouncing effort.
27'
Kwarteng sure can create
Kwarteng, who arrived from Bochum in the winter, has already provided his fourth assist in just his eighth match for Düsseldorf. No player has provided more assists in the second half of the season for Fortuna than the former Hamburg player.
25'
Clash
Siebert and Selke both engage in an intense challenge following a cross from the left flank. In the end, the Fortuna defender manages to clear the ball and prevent Selke from getting a shot away.
24'
Muheim again
This time, the left-footer tries his hand as a provider and delicately sends Karabec into the penalty area on the left. However, Kastenmeier is placed well to collect the ball.

Dangerous free kick
After Siebert's reckless foul, Hamburg get a good free-kick opportunity on the right side, level with the edge of the penalty area. Muheim's ball dips towards the far post and Kastenmeier lets it slip through his fingers for a corner for HSV, and again Kastenmeier drops it before he clears.
18'
Fortuna fight back out of nowhere!
Fortuna had been completely out of this until Kwarteng dissects the Hamburg defence 40 metres in front of the home side's goal with a chipped ball up to Kownacki. The goalscorer makes no mistake when free in front of Heuer Fernandes, coolly slotting it into the bottom left corner!

Hamburg remain well on top. Mikelbrencis, coming from the right side, dribbles into the penalty area without much resistance but shoots over with his left foot. Another great opportunity for Hamburg.

Selke skies chance for a second

What a rocket
Muheim's shot hit the top right corner at a speed of 111 kilometres per hour.
8'
Booking for Kastenmeier
Kastenmeier grumbles at the referee in the aftermath of the conceded goal, claiming that the official missed a foul. The referee shows a yellow card to the Fortuna goalkeeper.
7'
What a goal!
Hamburg have an early lead - with a rocket from Muheim, who, after Karabec won the ball in Fortuna's half, takes a chance from 30 metres out and rifles it with his left foot into the top right corner. Kastenmeier has no chance of stopping that!
4'
Hamburg hunting early advantage
The hosts are trying to control the match in the opening minutes through numerous touches of the ball. So far, they're managing quite well - up to around 30 yards in front of the visitors' goal.
3'
High intensity
Sliding tackles are the order of the day at the start of this match. The referee is having to keep a close eye on proceedings from the very first minutes.
2'
Tough challenge
Reis and Zimmermann tangle in a full sprint and then the Fortuna player crashes into a teammate. That looks painful, but Zimmermann should be able to continue.

Kick-off!
It's a sell-out
The Volksparkstadion is packed to the rafters. The teams are coming onto the pitch. We're about to kick off!
Captain on board
After Fortuna captain Hoffmann began on the bench for the last five matchdays, the skipper is now in the starting XI for the first time since Matchday 19.
Four changes for Fortuna
Düsseldorf also lost on the last matchday, and Fortuna manager Thioune makes four changes against his former club. Gavory, Hoffmann, Zimmermann and Kownacki move into the starting eleven for Düsseldorf. Fridriksson, Haag (both not in the squad), Appelkamp and van Brederode (both on the bench) are not included.
The value of faith
The last time Hamburg started with an unchanged starting eleven after a defeat, as they have done today, was in December 2021 under Tim Walter. It proved a wise move back then, as after a 0-1 loss in Hannover, Hamburg went on to win 3-0 at home against Rostock.
Fortuna Düsseldorf starting XI
Kastenmeier - Heyer, Oberdorf, Hoffmann, Siebert, Gavory - Zimmermann, Kwarteng, Jóhannesson - Kownacki, Pejčinović
Hamburg starting XI
Heuer Fernandes - Mikelbrencis, Hadžikadunić, Elfadli, Muheim - Karabec, Meffert, Reis - Sahiti, Selke, Dompé
Daniel Thioune on facing Hamburg
"We have a vision of how we can beat Hamburg as well. Last weekend, we saw that they can be beaten if you're at your maximum in all areas. We'll need brutal intensity. We'll have to run and work a lot, and leave our hearts out there on the pitch."
Merlin Polzin on facing Düsseldorf
"It will be a special match for me and Daniel (Thioune). We've experienced a lot together, especially here in Hamburg. But all in all, it doesn't have any influence on the game; it's more of an off-pitch topic. I'm looking forward to the match and seeing Daniel again."
No Happy Ending
Daniel Thioune was head coach of Hamburg in 2020/21, helping the team to become winter champions and ultimately collected 52 points in 31 matches. Three rounds before the end of the season, he was dismissed with the team sitting in fourth place.
Reunited again
After 112 second-division matches in a Hamburg shirt (13 goals), Moritz Heyer transferred to Daniel Thioune's Düsseldorf in January 2025. Heyer had previously worked under Thioune at HSV and in Osnabrück.
Four decades ago
Fortuna's last away win against Hamburg was almost 40 years ago. On 25 May 1985, they secured a 2-1 victory in the Bundesliga, with Andreas Kaiser and Ralf Dusend scoring for Düsseldorf, while Manfred Kaltz netted for HSV.
Fortress Volkspark
Fortuna are a welcome guest at the Volkspark - Hamburg have not lost any of their last 12 home matches against Düsseldorf (10 wins, two draws), and historically have won 20 of their 28 home matches against them.
Just a slip-up?
The 2-0 loss in Düsseldorf exactly one year ago (8 March 2024) was Hamburg's only defeat in their last 10 competitive matches against Fortuna (five wins, four draws). Among that run, HSV won the reverse fixture this term 3-0 against the then league-leaders.
