Augsburg came from behind to beat Mainz thanks to two goals from Ermin Demirovic. A Ludovic Ajorque header put Mainz in front, and they thought they had levelled when Stefan Bell turned another effort in, but a VAR consultation saw an earlier offside and the goal did not stand. It sparked the hosts into life and Demirovic struck twice before the break to earn them the points, which they had to work hard for after Arne Engels was shown a straight red card on the hour mark – once again after VAR consultation.

Augsburg team news

Sven Michel is set to return in the lone striker's role after missing the last two games with a muscle strain. That could well prompt a change in formation, with defender Maximilian Bauer a candidate to drop out. Summer signing Masaya Okugawa remains among the absentees.

Mainz team news

French striker Ludovic Ajorque didn't feature in the draw with Frankfurt and missed the loss to Bremen on Matchday 3 altogether due to muscular problems. He returned as a substitute last time out, replacing Marco Richter, and is in contention to start.
