Full-time: Bremen 1-0 Pauli

Bremen hang on to the lead provided by Mbangula early on - the quickest Bundesliga goal so far this season - to claim their first three points in the league at home this campaign. Blessin's triple change injected more attacking impetus into Pauli, but they couldn't find an equaliser. Bremen will feel it's just as well too, as they themselves had plenty of opportunities late on to add another goal, but ultimately they'll feel it's a deserved victory.

Boniface leads the charge

The Nigerian powers up the left flank. Bremen have an overload and he tries to find Čović at the far post, but Wahl sticks out a leg to make a vital interception before the ball can reach the youngster.
88'

Grüll shoots

The Austrian is fed from the right. His low effort from the edge of the box is straight at Vasilj.

Up the other end

Pauli themselves come the closest to equalising immediately thereafter. Metcalfe picks the ball up in the right half-space on the edge of the box before curling an effort towards the far corner. Hein scrambles across is goal to try and make the save, but the ball flashes just across the face of goal.

Čović could've wrapped things up!

What a chance to seal the win for Bremen! A long ball over the top finds Schmid, who's one-on-one with his marker. He waits for support in the form of Čović, whom he slips through, but the substitute can't slot it past Vasilj, who pulls off a great stop with his feet.
camera-photo

The goalscorer departs

Mbangula's goal remains the difference here as he is replaced by Boniface with 10 minutes to play. Puertas also comes off for Čović.
80'

Renewed vigour

It's a very encouraging period for Pauli, who are pressing Bremen tenaciously. Fujita and Metcalfe have both had efforts from the edge of the box which have whistled just over the crossbar. They're getting closer...

Pauli get forward

Metcalfe plays Ceesay through to the byline, and the subsequent cutback causes real problems for the Bremen defence. The hosts manage to clear but only as far as Fujita at the edge of the box, whose follow-up effort is blocked. Pauli manage to rework it again, but the cross from the right which is met by Kaars' head, is sent over the bar.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The xG values indicate that Bremen are good value for their lead and are on course for their first home Bundesliga win of the campaign.

Triple change

Blessin opts to roll the dice with a triple substitution, bringing on Metcalfe, Saliakas and Ceesay.

Into the wall

Sinani takes the subsequent set-piece, opting to shoot. However, his effort is fired straight into the wall.
68'

First booking

Puertas receives the first yellow card of the game following over-passionate protests against the awarding of a free-kick following a foul from Grüll.
64'

Chance for Grüll

A long ball over the top releases the fresh legs of Grüll, who cuts back onto his right, beats a man, and shoots. However, Wahl manages to get a block in. Chances are beginning to open up for the hosts here, though.
63'

Shots blocked

Bremen work it very nicely from defence to attack. Schmid has an opportunity to shoot from the edge of the box. His effort is blocked and the ball falls to Stage, whose shot is similarly stopped before it can reach Vasilj.
60'

A change

Horst Steffen opts for his second substitution, replacing Njinmah with Grüll in a near like-for-like change. Can the Austrian help the hosts rediscover their first-half spark?

Finding their rhythm

Neither side have quite yet managed to get into their stride in the second half here. Pauli have had more of the ball, but both teams have found clear-cut chances hard to come by.

Whipped in

From a dead-ball, Pereira Lage curls a cross in, but Bremen are first to the ball and head it clear.

Hein's ball

Kaars fires a dangerous-looking low cross into the Bremen box from the right. He's looking for Pereira Lage, but his cross is just too close to Hein, who dives on the ball.

Half-time: Bremen 1-0 Pauli

Mbangula's early goal remains all that separates these sides as they head in at the break. Bremen have been very lively and are deserving of their lead, though Agu's injury has been the only blemish on an otherwise solid performance. Alexander Blessin will need more from his Pauli side in attacking areas if they're to come from behind here at the Weserstadion.

Kaars!

It's a first chance for the debutant. Oppie plays the ball into the Dutchman's path from the left. It looks as though Kaars will have a one-on-one with Hein, but Agu rushes across to make the block.

Njinmah goes down

Mbangula leads a Bremen break and plays Njinmah into the box, who takes a fall under a challenge. The Bremen players scream for a penalty, but the referee correctly dismisses the protests.

Better from Pauli

Blessin's side work a good, patient move towards the Bremen goal. They pick out Pyrka on the edge of the box, who tries to curl an effort towards the near post, but the ball lands in the side netting.
36'

Mixed fortunes

Bremen have created some good chances in this first half and are deservedly ahead. Pauli will need to pull the trigger more if they're to find a way back into this one.

There's a stoppage in play as Lynen receives treatment after a collision with a Pauli player. He's back to his feet now, though, and play resumes.

Stage hits one

Puertas tries to dance through numerous legs into the Pauli box, but is dispossessed. Bremen reclaim the ball, working it to Stage at the edge of the box, who feints to make space for a shot, which he takes with his left. Vasilj dives down well to his left to smother the attempt.

Lively Agu

The full-back has been one of Bremen's most productive players so far, and has frequently managed to get high up the pitch.
24'

Huge chance!

After Bremen were awarded a free-kick for a Fujita foul on Stage just inside the Pauli half, Puertas takes, finding Stage at the back post with a floated cross. The midfielder heads back across goal, finding Coulibaly unmarked at the penalty spot, but the defender's half-volley flies over the bar.

More direct hosts

With an even possession split and Pauli playing more passes, the values reflect the fact that Bremen have been more than happy to go long on a number of occasions.

Sugawara!

It's a fantastic counter-attack from Bremen. Schmid spins his man before playing Njinmah down the right. He cuts it back into the middle before his teammates work it left to Agu, who subsequently tees up Sugawara. The following shot from close range is met by a stunning reaction save from Vasilj.
7'

Pauli stabilising

Since going behind, the visitors have been knocking the ball around confidently and are finding their feet. Most recently, they fashioned a good move which saw Sinani release Lage, who loses out in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Hein.
camera-photo

Dream start!

That didn't take long. Stage drives up the right flank before attempting a cross into the middle. Pauli don't clear it properly and the ball falls to Mbangula, who dispatches a clinical low finish into the bottom left corner for his first Bundesliga goal at the Weserstadion. What a start!

First start for Kaars

The big news from the St. Pauli camp is that Kaars gets his first start of the season, replacing Hountondji in attack. At wingback, Pyrka comes in for Saliakas. Bremen boss Steffen is happy to start with the same XI that lost 4-0 to Bayern on Matchday 5.

Alexander Blessin on facing Bremen

"Werder's opening fixtures were just as tough as ours. They brought in lots of quality towards the end of the transfer window plus a very good coach, whose teams play attractive football."

Horst Steffen on facing St. Pauli

"St. Pauli defend very well, so we have to be very careful, even with our short passes. We'll see in the game whether we are able to match them."

It's been a while...

St. Pauli's last win against Werder Bremen came as far back as August 1977, when the Hamburg-based club won 3-1 in what was their first ever match in the Bundesliga.
