Full-time: Mainz 0-2 Dortmund

Dortmund stay unbeaten in 2025/26 following a clinical display in Mainz. Daniel Svensson and Karim Adeyemi got the goals, with Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner's second-half red card all but ending the game as a contest. It's now four straight wins and clean sheets in the Bundesliga for BVB, who stay hot on leaders Bayern Munich's heels. Mid-table Mainz haven't won at home in eight...

Fantastic Rieß!

The Mainz sub stretches every sinew to stop Brandt finding the top corner, following a flowing BVB attack.

Added time

Nebel is booked for a foul on Schlotterbeck, but is quick to offer an apologetic hand. Five additional minutes to play at the Mewa Arena...

Fábio Silva gets his first taste of Bundesliga action. Maxi Beier, who's worked really hard in attack today, gets a well-earned rest.

Clinical from Dortmund today and without the injured Guirassy at that.

Worth a try

Nordin drives in off the right-hand side. The space opens up for him on the edge of the area, but his dipping strike clears the bar, with Kobel at full stretch.
80'

Dortmund old boy

Ex-BVB defensive specialist Lennard Maloney enters the fray alongside young forward Nelson Weiper. Nadiem Amiri and Armindo Sieb, neither able to influence the game, head off.

Watch: Zentner's rush of blood

That was Zentner's first sending off in the Bundesliga. As a result, he'll be suspended for the trip to Hamburg next week.
77'

Fresh legs

Kovač shuffles his midfield pack, with Pascal Groß and Jobe Bellingham on. The industrious duo of Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha make way.
72'

Close!

Chukwuemeka loses track of Bell as Amiri sends in a teasing cross from the right, but the Mainz sub's downward header falls the wrong side of the upright. That would've made things interesting...
69'

Changes

Lasse Rieß is on in the Mainz goal, with defender Hanche-Olsen sacrificed. Dortmund also make a couple of changes, with Julian Ryerson and Carney Chukwuemeka replacing Yan Couto and Adeyemi.
67'

Mainz down to 10!

The 05ers' task just got a whole lot harder. Kobel claims a cross and immediately goes long for Adeyemi. Zentner thinks about coming, pauses momentarily and then charges out, clattering into the BVB goalscorer. Easy decision for the referee - straight red.
64'

Double sub

That's it for Lee, who's been pretty quiet in the Mainz attack, and Leitsch, who's beginning to tire at the back. Arnaud Nordin and Stefan Bell are the respective changes.
60'

Ticking off

Stephan Kuhnert - a member of Svensson's coaching team - talks his way into the referee's book. Something has really got his goat...
56'

Chance!

Mainz are not out of this yet as Hanche-Olsen finds room to attack a Nebel corner, but his header is too close to Kobel, who bats the ball to safety.

Title rivalry resumed

Dortmund will defend second place if it stays like this. They're currently just two points behind leaders Bayern, who beat Bremen 4-0 last night to continue their perfect start to 2025/26.
51'

Elbows

Amiri's penalised for leading with an elbow in an aerial challenge on Svensson. He can have no complaints with the card.
47'

Right idea

Adeyemi drifts in off the right and tries to find Brandt in the centre, but the cross has too much on it.
46'

Here we go again

Dortmund kick off the second half in a commanding position in Mainz. No changes from either head coach.

Half-time: Mainz 0-2 Dortmund

Dortmund have a comfortable lead in what's actually been a pretty even contest. Mainz struck a post immediately before Svensson put the visitors ahead. Adeyemi then capped a lightning transition to give the Black-Yellows daylight going into the break. Long way back for Mainz...

Caution

Yan Couto collects the game's first booking for a foul on Mwene. Intriguing little battle, that one.

Adeyemi for 2-0!

Mr Catch-Me-If-You-Can puts Dortmund in control. He only has one thing on his mind as he receives a pass from Yan Couto in the BVB half, after a Mainz throw is picked off. The Germany international duly tears away to go one-on-one with Leitsch, before exchanging passes with Brandt and sweeping past Zentner for his second goal in as many games. That's also two assists for Brandt today.

That was Svensson's third Dortmund goal, after efforts in last season's Bundesliga and at the Club World Cup. This is his 28th competitive appearance for the club he initially joined on loan in February from Nordsjaelland.

Advantage Dortmund!

So harsh on Mainz. Moments after Nebel pokes a Sieb cross against the woodwork, Dortmund take the lead. It's a sweeping move that culminates in Brandt sliding an inviting right-wing cross to the back post, where the unmarked Svensson can't miss.

Denied!

Adeyemi gets a pass into feet in the Mainz box. He cuts inside onto his favoured left foot, but his attempt to curl one into the far corner is blocked by Leitsch.
19'

No booking

There's a brief stoppage as Sieb accidentally steps on Yan Couto's standing leg. Schlotterbeck takes the ensuing set-piece, bending it out of play for a Mainz goal-kick.

Power of the punch

Amiri sends in a free-kick from deep. Hanche-Olsen wins the header, the Mainz defender looping an effort in the direction of the BVB goal and forcing Kobel to fist clear.

The Dortmund defence switches off as Mwene sneaks in behind to receive a long punt from Leitsch. The Austrian flashes a low cross into the danger zone, but there are no takers.

Anton to the rescue

A mix-up in midfield between Schlotterbeck and Nmecha gives Mainz the chance to break. The ball's worked into the Dortmund area, but Anton reads the danger and clears in front of Sieb.
4'

BVB in charge

Dortmund are looking very comfortable on the ball as Beier tries to touch a long pass into the path of Adeyemi in the Mainz box. The red shirts get it clear, though.

Mainz lump it forward and out for an opposition throw-in in BVB territory. It's very loud inside the Mewa Arena - always a pleasure to hear.

Ready to rock

Glorious day for football in Mainz. The hosts will get the ball rolling...

No Guirassy, no problem

Guirassy has previously missed four Bundesliga games since joining Dortmund in summer 2024. BVB's record in his absence is an encouraging three wins - including at home to Mainz last term - and one draw.

Guirassy injury blow!

Dortmund talisman Serhou Guirassy - who has four goals in as many Bundesliga appearances so far this season - has pulled a muscle in the warm-up and will play no part. Julian Brandt starts in his stead.

The Kovač upswing

Ten points from a possible 12 not only represents Dortmund's best start to a league campaign in eight years, it also leaves Kovač with the best points-per-game ratio (2.1) of any BVB boss in the division’s history from his 18 matches in charge.

More on those teams

Mainz show three changes to the team that beat Augsburg last time out. Maxim Leitsch, Silvan Widmer and Jae-sung Lee are recalled, with the suspended Dominik Kohr, Anthony Caci and Arnaud Nordic making way. As for Dortmund, Yan Couto replaces Julian Ryerson on the right-hand side. Summer signing Fábio Silva is included in a matchday squad for the first time and Niklas Süle is back among the subs following an injury sustained in pre-season action.

Karim Adeyemi produced the highest shot speed for a goal this season against Wolfsburg last week. Who else cracks the top 5 for 2025/26?

Bo Henriksen on facing BVB

“I think Niko Kovač has done a really, really good job at BVB. Dortmund defend really well and also have a lot of quality up front that can hurt us if we’re sloppy in transition. It’s obviously a game against a really good opponent – but anything is possible.”
camera-photo

Kovač on Mainz

“Mainz have developed really well [under Bo Henriksen], even if they haven’t made the start they’d have liked this season. They’ve suffered two narrow defeats at home. They’re very tough opponents. I want us to show our confidence in Mainz.”

Kovač on BVB’s defensive record

“As a top team, we’ve tried to minimise the number of goals we’re conceding. We’re now performing at a good level. The lads are doing really well at the moment - it’s paying off.”

Mainz finally off the mark

After taking one point from their first three league assignments of 2025/26, Mainz snapped the winless streak with a 4-1 victory away to Augsburg. The 05ers have also negotiated a UEFA Europa League play-off tie with Rosenborg and, like Dortmund, are through to the DFB Cup second round.

BVB on the prowl

Dortmund are Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich's closest pursuers going into Matchday 5. Victory over Wolfsburg was BVB's third in four league matches this season, while the only blot to the copybook was a 3-3 draw at St. Pauli on the opening weekend. Borussia also dropped points from a winning position in a wild 4-4 draw at Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.
