Full-time: RB Leipzig 2-1 St. Pauli

Goals from Schlager and Orbán sent Werner's charges on their way to securing a place in next season's UEFA Champions League. Ceesay's late strike was unable to kickstart a comeback for Pauli, who now face a must-win clash against relegation rivals Wolfsburg next weekend.

Irvine!

What a moment that would have been! Pauli work it well down the left which leads to Ceesay playing the ball across for Irvine, who strikes the ball first time and forces Vandevoordt into a save.

Another today! 18 of Orbán's 28 Bundesliga goals have been scored with his head, and all of them have been scored in the penalty area.

Another change

Gruda goes off to a standing ovation. He's replaced by Nusa.

It should be three!

On his current form, you would have backed Baumgartner to score that. Schlager finds Baku on the right. He crosses into a central position where the Austrian takes a touch before firing over from close range.
77'

In search of a third

Finkgräfe looks to get himself involved early on. Raum's replacement gets to the byline and pulls the ball back, but there's no one on hand to fire home a third.
73'

Attacking change

Ceesay replaces Hountondji, who has performed well this afternoon.
70'

More changes

It's Leipzig's turn to make changes now. Finkgräfe and Seiwald enter the fray, with the captain's armband being passed to Schlager.
68'

Hard working

Pauli are working extremely hard against the ball, but it's also opening the game up for Leipzig, who, dominating possession, look comfortable at the moment.

Disallowed!

Rômulo makes an excellent run in behind before playing the ball across to Gruda, who takes a superb first touch inside before firing the ball into the net, but it's brought back for an offside in the build-up.

How will Pauli respond?

The visitors have two corners in quick succession but Leipzig are able to clear. Pauli are soon on the attack again down the left through Oppie, who drives forward before firing a low shot towards goal which is saved by Vandevoordt.

From the resulting corner, Raum places the ball perfectly onto the head of Orbán, who guides the ball in with a glancing header towards the far post.

Post!

Wow! What a move from Leipzig. Playing from back to front, Diomande is played through but in an attempt to round the onrushing Vasilj, takes the ball wide. The Ivorian, though, does well to bide his time to find Ouédraogo, who sees his effort cannon back off the post and behind for a corner via a deflection.

Another booking

It's the Austrian's ninth of the campaign after arriving late on Andō.

Déjà vu

It's much of the same from Leipzig, who are starting the second half like they did the first, keeping the ball and looking for an opening.

Half-time: Leipzig 1-0 St. Pauli

It's a case of missed opportunities for Pauli, who struck the crossbar through Kaars before Leipzig's Schlager opened the scoring with an emphatic finish on the strike of half time. A win for Werner's charges here will see them secure UEFA Champions League football next season.

Tenacious midfielder

Fujita is proving problematic for Leipzig's midfield. Pauli's No.16 is up for this one, often winning the ball in the defensive third and initiating the counter-attacks.

Pauli lead xGoals

info-small
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
All of a sudden, Pauli look all the more likely to open the scoring. They've had more shots than Leipzig, but neither of them have found the target. As the league's lowest scorers, they have to be more clinical in those situations.

Phwoar!

What a chance for Pauli! Leipzig are throwing bodies forward and it's leading to counter-attacking opportunities for the visitors. This time Hountondji finds Kaars who, with plenty of time, smashes his effort against the crossbar!
33'

Pauli growing in confidence

Fujita wins the ball from Gruda and drives forward, leading to a 3v2 situation. The Japanese midfielder plays the ball wide to Hountondji, who clips the ball back into a dangerous area, but Leipzig ride out Pauli's attacking wave and eventually clear.

Level pegging

Neither side have managed to find a breakthrough with 30 minutes played.

Wide!

Ouédraogo does well to shift inside before playing the ball into Rômulo, who manages to get his shot away from just outside of the area. The referee points for a goal-kick despite the Brazilian's appeals for a corner.
24'

In control

Leipzig continue to dominate possession but, other than Baku's effort, have been unable to find a way through Pauli's resilient defence. The visitors, meanwhile, are growing in confidence as we pass the halfway stage of the first half.

Lukeba saw his pass for Baku intercepted in the final third and was instantly caught on the back foot. Looking to make amends, the Frenchman earned himself a yellow card after halting Hountondji on Pauli's counter-attack.

A sight on goal!

Kaars times his run to perfection but Hountondji's pass has just a little too much power on it which allows Vandevoordt to collect.
11'

Leipzig continue to push

Werner's side are piling on the pressure! The ball is played wide to Gruda, who cuts inside and shapes to shoot with his left foot from the edge of the area, but slips as he hits the ball which allows Pauli to clear.
camera-photo

How did that not go in?

Rômulo wins the ball off Irvine and plays it wide to Diomande, who fizzes in a low cross into the path of Baumgartner which leads to a goalmouth scramble. The Austrian forces Vasilj into a save and the ball bounces to Baku one yard out from goal, but the Leipzig man hacks at his effort.
6'

No way out

Pauli can't find a way out. The visitors are looking to break on the counter-attack, but the long ball forward doesn't find Kaars and Leipzig are able to collect the ball again and put pressure on their opponents.
3'

Early dominance

Leipzig are looking for an early goal, applying pressure and pushing bodies forward. Pauli, though, have stood firm in the opening exchanges.

St. Pauli team news

After suffering defeat at home to Mainz last time out, Blessin has opted to shuffle his pack once more, with the likes of Smith and Ritzka moving into the back three. Elsewhere, Kaars, Oppie and Metcalfe (pictured) are starting in place of Sinani, Wahl and Mets. This is the first game any of the trio have started for well over a month. Alexander Blessin on facing Leipzig

Arkadiusz Pyrka on facing Leipzig

"I don't think we're going to Leipzig with nothing to lose," the winger told the St. Pauli club website. "We have to win, and we believe we can do it."

Ole Werner on facing St. Pauli

"St. Pauli are a team that defend very well and can defend in a deep block for long periods. They also get forward well in transition at regular intervals. They have clear ideas of how to play when in possession. and a clear identity that they have shown in the Bundesliga for two seasons now."

Pauli behind Hamburg

Following the Matchday 32 loss against Mainz, Pauli can now not mathematically finish above city rivals HSV, who they trail by eight points with two games remaining.
camera-photo

Huge Matchday 34 on the horizon

While Pauli will be desperate for points here, they will have an eye on their final-day game versus Wolfsburg, with the winner potentially avoiding automatic relegation and the loser dropping down to the second tier.
camera-photo

Pauli on the slide

Pauli ended last weekend in the automatic relegation spots, falling into the bottom three for the first time since Matchday 22. They are now without a victory in their past eight matches, which is currently the longest winless run in the Bundesliga.
camera-photo

Woodwork woes

Leipzig could have climbed even higher this season if the post and bar hadn't been in their way. They've hit the woodwork on 17 occasions, which is at least three more than any other side.
camera-photo

Leipzig to make club history?

Not only would a win here assure Leipzig of a top-four spot, it would also be their 20th league victory of the season, which would equal their club-record tally in the Bundesliga. Two wins from their last two fixtures would, therefore, see them establish a new club-record points total of 68.
