How things stand

After St. Pauli lost to Gladbach and Cologne drew with Hamburg, a win for Bremen would put them four points clear of the play-off spot and seven clear of the direct relegation places, while Mainz are just one point behind them, and would therefore go three clear of Pauli in 16th and six clear of Wolfsburg.

Goalless first leg

Mainz's first taste of a European knockout tie ended in a goalless draw away to Czech outfit Sigma Olomouc on Thursday evening in the UEFA conference league. Whilst disappointing for the 05ers, it leaves them in a good position for the second leg at the MEWA Arena. That being said, striker Silas had to be withdrawn through injury, leaving the field on a stretcher, and is therefore unlikely to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance in Bremen as forecast.
