Honours even

Urs Fischer and Sebastian Hoeneß have come up against each other six times, with each winning two games and the two remaining matches ending in draws. Their last meeting came in the second round of the DFB Cup in the 2023/24 campaign, which saw Stuttgart triumph 1-0 over Fischer's Union Berlin side thanks to a Deniz Undav goal.

Silas will line up against his former club this weekend. The forward scored 21 times in 91 games for Stuttgart, with injuries preventing him from netting more. He has one goal in seven games since his January arrival at Mainz.

In Undav and Jamie Leweling, Stuttgart have two of the most in-form players in the league. Leweling netted twice against Wolfsburg to take his 2026 tally to six strikes, level with Undav. The latter, though, has found the back of the net 14 times across the whole season compared to Leweling's seven.

Important months ahead for Stuttgart

As it stands, VfB are fourth in the table and level on points with Hoffenheim in third. They have a difficult run-in, though, with fixtures against Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Leipzig and Hoffenheim in their remaining 10 games.

Hoeneß's milestone

Against Wolfsburg, Stuttgart won on Hoeneß's 100th Bundesliga game in charge of the club. It was their 54th triumph under the former Hoffenheim head coach, giving him the best win percentage of any Stuttgart manager. It was also their 14th victory in the league in 2025/26, which is as many as they managed in the entirety of last season.

Stuttgart's upper hand

Stuttgart have already beaten Mainz twice this season - once in the league and once in the DFB Cup. Overall, Mainz have managed only one win versus the Swabians in their last 12, although that victory did come on the latter's last visit to the MEWA Arena.

Fantastic form under Fischer

Mainz have lost just two of their 13 competitive matches under new head coach Urs Fischer. Mainz have the seventh-best record in the Bundesliga since the Swiss' arrival. Additionally, they are yet to taste defeat at home under the boss, with their last loss in front of their own supporters coming at the start of December.
