Full-time: Mainz 2-2 Stuttgart

A pulsating second half comes to an end. A remarkable quickfire double from Demirović and Undav appeared to have earned the visitors all three points, only for da Costa's late header to salvage a share of the spoils for the hosts!

All square again!

Nebel's looping cross is headed against the crossbar by Mwene but da Costa is first to the rebound, stooping low to nod the ball over the line and fire Mainz level again. What a second half at the MEWA ARENA!

It's a brilliant finish too. Karazor can't quite control a low cross from the right-hand side but Demirović is on hand to slam a low shot past Batz to restore parity. What a strike!

No way through

Tietz's effort deflects off his own man and into the path of da Costa, whose looping cross is collected by Nübel.
73'

Good opportunity for hosts

Mwene is fouled by Nartey and Mainz have a free-kick in a very dangerous position.
71'

Open game

Mainz have not taken their foot off the gas since taking the lead. Another Becker delivery towards Tietz is intercepted by Chabot, but the home side continue to push forward in search of a second goal.

Huge let-off for Stuttgart!

Nübel's misplaced pass is intercepted by Becker, who lays the ball off to Tietz with the Stuttgart goalkeeper stranded. Jaquez does brilliantly to block the shot into the path of Nebel, whose follow-up effort strikes the inside of the post!
63'

Not quite accurate enough

Tietz fails to make proper contact with da Costa's delivery from the right, heading the ball high into the air for Nübel to collect.
61'

Visitors penalised

Führich swings another VfB corner into the six-yard area, but the referee spots an infringement and awards Mainz a free-kick.
59'

Stuttgart win a corner...

...but Batz gets a strong hand to the ball to clear the danger. The visitors have half an hour to find a route back into this game.
58'

More Mainz pressure

Becker's deliveries have caused Stuttgart all sorts of problems this afternoon, but his latest cross towards Mwene rolls behind for a goal-kick.
55'

Should it be 2-0?

Mainz surge forward on the counter-attack and Nebel bides his time before laying the ball off to Becker, whose shot is brilliantly saved by Nübel. So close to a second Mainz goal!
53'

Not quite...

Kohr's delivery from deep is just too high for Tietz, who can only divert the ball behind for a Stuttgart goal-kick.
camera-photo

From one end to the other

Führich goes close at the other end of the pitch, sending a fierce effort over the bar from the edge of the area.
50'

Sano from range

The midfielder collects a loose ball just inside the Stuttgart half and makes a beeline for goal. He lets fly from around 25 metres, but Nübel gets down quickly to make the save.
48'

Great defending

Führich cuts the ball back for Undav inside the Mainz penalty area, but da Costa sticks out a long leg to block the Germany international's effort.

Nebel denied

Becker gets the better of Jaquez down the left before lifting a cross towards Nebel at the far post, but the midfielder's first-time volley is blocked by Stiller. Another promising move from the hosts, who are growing in confidence as the game progresses.
24'

Just wide from Leweling

The winger gets on the end of a cross from the left and manages to flick it towards goal, but the ball rolls narrowly wide of the post.
23'

Still goalless - but only just

Both teams have had opportunities to take the lead. Mainz are a little fortunate to be on level terms, but the home side are gradually establishing a foothold in the contest.
camera-photo

Big chance for the host

Widmer does brilliantly to find Nebel, who is left unmarked deep inside the Stuttgart penalty area. Nebel tries to tee up Tietz for a simple finish but Jaquez gets in the way, clearing the ball behind for a corner which comes to nothing.
17'

Mainz living dangerously

Jeff Chabot's long-range effort is parried away by Batz before Demirović manages to get a flick on Führich's teasing ball from the left. Not for the first time, Undav arrives a split-second too late.

Mwene does well to find space for the cross down the left-hand side, but Chabot manages to beat Becker to the delivery before clearing the danger.

Relentless pressure

11'

All Stuttgart

The visitors are firmly on top so far, but can they make their early pressure count?
camera-photo

So close!

Leweling whips a sumptuous ball across the face of goal. Undav very nearly gets a touch but can't quite make contact with the delivery, which sails narrowly wide of Batz's far post.
7'

Corner number three

Stuttgart's third corner of the match is punched away by Batz right underneath the crossbar. Mainz are struggling to get out of their own half at the moment.
5'

Danger averted

Mainz manage to clear Mittelstädt's second corner, but Stuttgart remain on the front foot...
3'

Early chance for Stuttgart

Mainz fail to clear a Mittelstädt corner and the loose ball eventually falls to Undav, who tees up Mittelstädt on the edge of the six-yard box. The full-back's effort appears to be heading for the top corner until Batz gets his fingertips to the ball, tipping it over the bar for another corner.

Watch: The art of the set piece

The 2025/26 season has already seen some brilliant set-piece routines, with sides trying to improve their efficiency in a game of fine margins.

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Mainz

"Urs Fischer has brought some energy back to the club. Mainz are on the right track, and this will be a tough match, but we’ll be looking to get something out of the game and to see if we can beat them again.”
camera-photo

Crunch time

Stuttgart are just two points above Leipzig and three above sixth-placed Leverkusen. With Mainz fighting for every possible point at the other end of the table, will the visitors hold their nerve?
camera-photo

Honours even

Urs Fischer and Sebastian Hoeneß have come up against each other six times, with each winning two games and the two remaining matches ending in draws. Their last meeting came in the second round of the DFB Cup in the 2023/24 campaign, which saw Stuttgart triumph 1-0 over Fischer's Union Berlin side thanks to a Deniz Undav goal.
camera-photo

Familiar face

Silas will line up against his former club this weekend. The forward scored 21 times in 91 games for Stuttgart, with injuries preventing him from netting more. He has one goal in seven games since his January arrival at Mainz.
camera-photo

In-form duo

In Undav and Jamie Leweling, Stuttgart have two of the most in-form players in the league. Leweling netted twice against Wolfsburg to take his 2026 tally to six strikes, level with Undav. The latter, though, has found the back of the net 14 times across the whole season compared to Leweling's seven.
camera-photo

Important months ahead for Stuttgart

As it stands, VfB are fourth in the table and level on points with Hoffenheim in third. They have a difficult run-in, though, with fixtures against Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Leipzig and Hoffenheim in their remaining 10 games.
camera-photo

Hoeneß's milestone

Against Wolfsburg, Stuttgart won on Hoeneß's 100th Bundesliga game in charge of the club. It was their 54th triumph under the former Hoffenheim head coach, giving him the best win percentage of any Stuttgart manager. It was also their 14th victory in the league in 2025/26, which is as many as they managed in the entirety of last season.
camera-photo

Stuttgart's upper hand

Stuttgart have already beaten Mainz twice this season - once in the league and once in the DFB Cup. Overall, Mainz have managed only one win versus the Swabians in their last 12, although that victory did come on the latter's last visit to the MEWA Arena.
camera-photo

Fantastic form under Fischer

Mainz have lost just two of their 13 competitive matches under new head coach Urs Fischer. Mainz have the seventh-best record in the Bundesliga since the Swiss' arrival. Additionally, they are yet to taste defeat at home under the boss, with their last loss in front of their own supporters coming at the start of December.
