Full-time: St. Pauli 0-0 Hamburg

The game finishes goalless, and it's a result that doesn't really benefit either side. The focus seemed mostly on defensive solidity rather than a desire to take all three points. Both sides had a couple of half-chances, but neither side ever really looked like scoring.

Another good effort

Jones causes problems down the left, but to no avail. Pyrka then has space to shoot, and Heuer Fernandes is forced into another good save.

Good strike

Pyrka and Sinani combine well down the right, allowing the latter to get a shot away inside the box. Vasilj makes a good stop, but the ball falls for Oppie in a good position, though he can't tuck the chance away.

Smith gets his head to a free-kick, and it is an awkward one for Heuer Fernandes, who, in the end, decides to flick the ball over the bar for a corner.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
And that isn't too surprising given the xG totals we have so far.

Big chance

Vušković gets up highest from a corner and wins the header, but his effort is straight at Vasilj, and the goalkeeper makes an important save. That's the closest we've come to a goal tonight.
53'

Almost a chance

Königsdörffer is fed through on the right, but Dźwigała manages to get back well and clear behind for a corner. The set-piece is then cleared as far as Vieira, and his effort deflects out for another corner.

Good effort

Hamburg counter well from a St. Pauli corner. A cross from the left is then cleared out to Vušković. The young defender has a go, but his half-volley narrowly clears the crossbar.

Nie Wieder

Never again. On 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. Since 2004, football matches around 27 January have become a symbol of remembrance for all of the people who were persecuted, deported and murdered under National Socialism.

Half-time: St. Pauli 0-0 Hamburg

The intensity has certainly been there in the opening 45 minutes, but the chances haven't been. It took Hamburg until added time to have their first shot of the game, and it was actually the best chance of the match. Even then, the Hamburg trio that were on the break should have made more of it. Lots to do for both teams in the second half.

Good opportunity

Downs has room to break with Vieira and Baldé alongside him. The forward then rolls the ball over to Baldé on the edge of the box. He cuts inside and shoots with his right, but the effort is tame and easy for Vasilj. That should have been more dangerous.

Hamburg yet to have an official shot

Hamburg have had a couple of shots in this game, although neither have counted due to offside. That means the visitors are yet to have a shot, and we've played 41 minutes.

A bit of fire

After challenging for a long ball, there is a bit of pushing and shoving between Pyrka and Baldé.
35'

It wouldn't have counted

A deflection loops into the air in the box, and Downs gets there first, right in front of the goalkeeper. However, with so much of the goal to hit, he can only shoot straight at Vasilj. Luckily for the Hamburg striker, the flag is up, and his missed opportunity means very little.
34'

Hamburg growing into the game

The visitors have looked dangerous on the flanks in the last few minutes. A couple of crossing opportunities could have come to more.
31'

Almost

Pereira Lage whips in a great cross from the left that Pyrka almost gets on the end of, but he gets his jump wrong and doesn't really get much height on his leap.

Best effort so far

A long ball over the top finds Jatta. He dips inside and tries to curl the ball in with his left, but Vasilj gets across to tip the shot away. Downs nearly gets on the end of the rebound, but to no avail. The flag then goes up for offside, though it is unclear whether any potential goal would have counted or not. It would have been close.

Foul throw

Pyrka takes a throw-in on the right, but makes a mess of it and gives away a foul throw.
camera-photo

A frantic start

We've had a few breaks in play because of fouls and that injury to Rössing-Lelesiit, but when the ball has been in play, it has been a frantic affair.
16'

Pauli want a penalty

A ball bounces off the arm of Jatta after an aerial duel inside the Hamburg box, but the referee waves play on. Ball-to-hand is the decision, and VAR agrees. After the ball is cleared, Smith attempts a volley, but the effort is a poor one.
14'

An early change

That earlier challenge on Rössing-Lelesiit has seemingly done some damage, and he can't continue. Baldé is on to replace him.
11'

Fouls breaking up the game

There have been a few breaks in play since that challenge due to fouls, and now it looks like Rössing-Lelesiit will have to go off because of that earlier challenge.

Reckless

Dźwigała comes flying in on Rössing-Lelesiit, and although he makes a bit of contact with the ball, he is late, high and far too aggressive. The result is a yellow card.

More than just bragging rights up for grabs

Although tonight's game is a derby, a win would mean that little bit more, given the relegation threat that both sides face. A win for either side would plunge the other into deeper trouble. St. Pauli won the Matchday 2 fixture, but the Boys in Brown haven't won both derbies in a season since the 2019/20 campaign, when they beat Hamburg 2-0 in both matches.

St. Pauli's home struggles

In contrast to most newly promoted sides, where the home ground has to become a fortress, St. Pauli have struggled to put points on the board at the Millerntor since their promotion in 2024. Instead, Pauli have been reliant on their away form. Last season, they earned 18 away points and only 14 at home. This season, Pauli have the second-worst home record in the league with just seven points. That being said, tonight's hosts have only played seven home games so far this season due to their game against RB Leipzig being cancelled during Matchday 16.

Early Hamburg team news

Captain Yussuf Poulsen is out for this one, but Warmed Omari's participation has not been ruled out as he continues to get back to full strength following an ankle injury.

Early St. Pauli team news

Andréas Hountondji and David Nemeth are unavailable to Alexander Blessin for this one. Danel Sinani was a doubt with a calf injury earlier in the week, but Blessin has confirmed that he is now back in contention to feature, as is captain Jackson Irvine. Connor Metcalfe, though, will not play as he continues to recover from a knee issue.

Watch: Heuer Fernandes' blooper against St. Pauli

camera-photo

Heuer Fernandes: "A derby week is a different kind of week"

"We are aware that a derby week is a different kind of week, but we have to live that on the training pitch and be aggressive there, as well as being prepared for what’s coming on Friday. We saw that in training — it was very aggressive, very intense. And I think if you prepare like that, it’s easier to implement it in the match.”
camera-photo

Daniel Heuer Fernandes: "Derby matches are special"

“Derby matches are special, and of course they have a very high importance. That's why we want to win the match. We will not be gifted a derby win — that’s clear to us. For the three points, we have to invest everything. But the anticipation and simply the excitement for this match are definitely there.”
camera-photo

Vasilj: "You can just feel the energy"

“I like these games. I always like the big stage. It’s just the energy you feel in the days and even weeks before the derby. It’s a big thing. And the people that approach you during this time and ask you questions, you can just feel the energy and excitement about this game. For me, it’s a big thing, a big game to play. I’m really looking forward to it."
camera-photo

Nikola Vasilj: "We have to play with our hearts"

"This is a must-win game. I think you don’t have to talk about the basics, about motivation for this game. It just comes naturally. So for us, we have to try to keep the defensive stability. I did that pretty well in the last games. We were a little bit unlucky also in some moments to concede some goals. We have to stay clear in our heads and play with our hearts. That’s the most important thing in these games.”

Watch: Hamburg derby - a study in contrasts

Kicking off Matchday 19 on Friday evening, it’s one of German football’s spiciest derbies – St. Pauli against Hamburg. When the sides met at the end of August, for the first time in many a long Bundesliga year, visitors St. Pauli claimed the local bragging rights. Now, HSV are out for revenge at the Millerntor. Two city neighbours with highly contrasting histories and images, as also embodied by HSV fan Sievi and St. Pauli diehard ‘Kiezpirat Kalle’. Bringing their two worlds briefly together, we sample the pre-derby atmosphere in Hamburg.

A tactical look at the players on both sides of the Hamburg divide as St. Pauli prepare to host HSV on Matchday 19.
camera-photo

Hamburg's attacking edge

Across the 29 previous meetings between these sides between the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, 81 goals have been scored for an average of nearly three per game. It's HSV who have the edge, netting 46 compared to Pauli's 35.
camera-photo

Merlin Polzin on facing St. Pauli

"We’re aware that the recent matches at the Millerntor haven’t been satisfactory in terms of results and, at times, performances. But for us, it’s not about correcting things from the past - we’re focused on what’s happening here and now. We’ve prepared very well this week for what awaits us on Friday night."
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing Hamburg

“HSV are very flexible positionally. We will see how high they set up, how quickly they drop into a deep block, or whether they defend aggressively going forward in counter-pressing situations. There are always opportunities where we can hurt them in the transition.”
camera-photo

Hamburg's away troubles

On the one hand, Hamburg have lost just two of their last six games and are up to 14th in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, they are the only side yet to win away from home in the German top flight this campaign, scoring just four times along the way.
camera-photo

Rock-bottom Pauli

Alexander Blessin's side have lost both of their two games in 2026, while they have won only one of their last 14 league games. However, those aforementioned pair of defeats this calendar year are their only two losses in their last five outings, which will give them hope as they look to extend their stay in the Bundesliga.

St. Pauli staged a brave fightback from 2-0 down, only to succumb to a late Emre Can penalty in Saturday's meeting with Borussia Dortmund. It was the Kiezkicker's 11th loss of the season and leaves them bottom of the table on goal difference, one point behind the relegation play-off position but four adrift of outright safety. However, like HSV, they also have a game in hand after their Matchday 16 meeting with RB Leipzig was postponed.
