Tight top-four race

While Bayern have a healthy lead at the Bundesliga summit, Leipzig are currently in a six-way tussle with Dortmund, Hoffenheim, Stuttgart, Leverkusen and Frankfurt for a place in the top four, so will be keen not to lose ground here. The recent return of Diomande from the Africa Cup of Nations is a big boost in that regard.

Right-back conundrum

With Laimer, Stanišić and Boey all ruled out for this game with injury, Vincent Kompany could be forced to field Joshua Kimmich at right-back. The 30-year-old, who normally operates in central midfield, has played there frequently throughout his career, including for Germany of late. Kompany's other alternatives include putting Guerreiro, Bischof or Davies at right-back, but all three are naturally left-footed.

Kampl to donate 4,444 litres of beer

Kevin Kampl will receive an official farewell from RB Leipzig before kick-off today. It was announced earlier this month that the 35-year-old's contract would be terminated by mutual consent at the end of January due to "personal reasons". By way of thanking the club's fans for their support during his more than eight years at the club, Kampl will donate 4,444 litres of beer at the stadium today, in a nod to his number 44 jersey.

"Leipzig have a young team, so it can happen that not everything goes perfectly in the first game. They were right behind us for a long time after that [the 6-0 victory for Bayern against Leipzig in the opening game of the season] and won a lot of games. Many of their players have developed very well. Their coach has also been there for a while now. They're a strong attacking team, so it could be a great game. It will be intense, both teams are capable of scoring goals. It'll be very interesting."

Kompany reveals Musiala return

In his pre-match press conference, Kompany revealed Musiala is set to be a part of a matchday squad for the first time this season against RB Leipzig. "If everything goes well today [Friday], he will be there. That's great news. He radiates a lot of positive energy. Even the little things are great right now. First and foremost, it's about integration. Now he's had time to rebuild his body, strengthen his mobility and his speed."

Neuer set to move into Bayern's all-time top five

The goalkeeper is expected to make his 584th competitive appearance for Bayern this weekend, which would see him draw him level with the legendary Franz Beckenbauer. Only Thomas Müller (756), Sepp Maier (709), Oliver Kahn (632) and Gerd Müller (607) have played more games for the record champions.

Home form helping Leipzig's UCL push

After failing to qualify for European competition last season, Leipzig are now on track for a spot in the Champions League next term as they sit third after 16 games. Their form at the Red Bull Arena has been crucial to that, having won eight of their nine games in front of their own supporters this campaign.

Bayern register record first half of season

The Bavarians, who remain unbeaten after 17 matches, amassed 47 points and a goal difference of +53 during the first half of the campaign, better than even Pep Guardiola's 2013/14 vintage.

Laimer ruled out

Bayern come into the game with a few issues in defence. After Josip Stanišić was ruled out of action for a month, Konrad Laimer will now miss the return to his former club after suffering a calf muscle strain in Wednesday night's game.
