They're happy in that part of Hamburg tonight

The huge three points went down very well at Millerntor.
camera-photo

Man of the Match

Due to technical issues, the Man of the Match vote could not be carried out as usual. The editorial choice was Martijn Kaars, who was decisive with his two goals.
camera-photo

Full-time: Pauli 2-1 Heidenheim

What a result for St. Pauli. With that win - their first since Matchday 3 - the Hamburg-based outfit leapfrog Heidenheim in the table despite playing the entire second half with just 10 men. Kaars doubled his side's lead soon after the restart, rounding off a clinical counter-attack, before Pieringer halved the deficit 11 minutes later. Heidenheim kept pushing, but they couldn't find quite break down Pauli's well organised defence again.

Drops for Schimmer!

What a huge chance for the equaliser there! Pieringer heads the ball down for the super sub, who has time to shoot from the six-yard box, but a stunning, last-ditch challenge from Wahl does enough to put him off.

Five additional minutes have been indicated. Are we in for some late drama here in Hamburg?

So nearly for Honsak!

It's Mainka with some impressive hold-up play in the Pauli box. The Heidenheim captain then tees up Honsak, who nearly catches Vasilj out with a half-volley towards the near post. But the Pauli keeper comes across in the nick of time to tip it round the post.

The goalscorer for Heidenheim is the latest to be cautioned for a late challenge on Oppie.
83'

Blocked by Mets

Heidenheim work it across the face of the Pauli goal to Traoré, who has a crack from the edge of the box. However, Mets throws himself at the shot to make a good block. Pauli are continuing to hold firm here...
81'

Föhrenbach!

The ball pops up for the Heidenheim man on the edge of the Pauli box, but he slips as he strikes it. It does take a deflection behind for a corner, which Honsak takes, but Heidenheim don't manage to make anything of the set-piece.
79'

Jones does well

Fujita releases the recently introduced Jones down the right flank. He has to wait for support to arrive but does well to win a corner. Oppie comes across to take it, but Heidenheim clear the danger.
camera-photo

The goalscorer departs

Kaars leaves the field with two goals to his name - his first two in the Bundesliga for Pauli. He is replaced by last week's late hero, Jones.
75'

Shanked the connection

Pauli win the initial header from an Ibrahimović corner, but it drops to Honsak on the left side of the box, whose first-time effort is well wide, much to Pauli's relief.
72'

In from Oppie

Hard running from Kaars is rewarded with a corner. Oppie swings it in from the right, and it looks as though it may creep in but Ramaj does well to punch it clear.
69'

Pyrka booked

The wide player picks up a yellow card for a tactical foul on Kaufmann.
68'

Wide of the mark

A cut back from the byline down the left finds Schimmer in the box, who aims for the near post, but ultimately fires well wide.
65'

Double change

In the wake of that goal, Schmidt makes further offensive alterations, introducing Kaufmann and Honsak for Beck and Siersleben. Can the substitutes help Heidenheim find an equaliser?
camera-photo

Pieringer halves the deficit!

Heidenheim are back in it! Busch crosses from the right, finding Schimmer at the near post, who helps it on with a volley. His ball comes to Pieringer at the far post, who was well placed for a tap-in for his first goal of the campaign! That has stunned the home crowd...

Ibrahimović at the near post!

The ball pops up kindly for Heidenheim's No.22 on right side of the Pauli box. The Bayern loanee curls a precise effort towards the near post, but Vasilj comes across well to tip it behind for a corner.

Pieringer tees up Niehues on the edge of the Pauli box, but the midfielder's effort is a tame one, and the goalkeeper smothers the attempt with no real difficulty.

Kaars rounds off clinical counter!

Ruthlessly efficient from the hosts! Dźwigała wins the ball back deep inside his own half. He lays it off right to Pyrka, who then finds Fujita. The Japanese midfielder picks his head up and spots the run of Kaars in behind, who charges from the halfway line before smashing it into the bottom left corner past Ramaj.

Almost the immediate impact

Schimmer, who has garnered a reputation for scoring goals off the bench of late with four goals as a substitute in his last six games, nearly had another one! Busch found him with a defence-splitting pass and Schimmer then nutmegged Vasilj with a low finish, but the ball just wouldn't go between the posts for the No.9, as the goalkeeper got a touch to carry it wide and behind for a corner.
46'

Back underway!

The ball is rolling again at the Millerntor here. Both managers elect to make changes at the break: Blessin withdraws striker Pereira Lage for centre-back Dźwigała, whilst Schmidt introduces Traoré and super sub Schimmer.

Half-time: Pauli 1-0 Heidenheim

At the break, hosts Pauli head in with a well deserved lead courtesy of an absolute rocket from Kaars - incidentally the Dutchman's first Bundesliga goal for St. Pauli. Minutes later, however; it was heartbreak for the hosts as Smith was shown a red card for a foul on Pieringer. Down to 10 men, the Hamburg outfit will need to be at their very best if they're to preserve their lead and claim their first win since Matchday 3.

Smith given marching orders!

Disastrous end to the half for Pauli! From a long ball up the back for Heidenheim, Smith is too careless with his pass back to his keeper. Pieringer picks his pocket just inside the Pauli half, and the No.8 brings him down. As the last defender back, he is shown a straight red card!

In by Smith

Pereira Lage's attempted cross from the left earns Pauli a corner. Smith plays a one-two with Kaars, before swinging it in from the left towards Pereira Lage at the far post, whose header back into the six-yard box doesn't find a touch to take it beyond Ramaj.
camera-photo

Kaars rifles in the opener!

A lovely passing move from Pauli culminates in Fujita spinning his marker on the edge of the box, before slipping Kaars through on the right side of the penalty area. Among bodies and from a tight angle, Kaars takes aim and smashes the ball into the roof of the net past Ramaj at the near post. What a finish from the Dutchman!

Pauli with more goal threat

info-small
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Although the xG values suggest that 0-0 is a fair reflection of the proceedings thus far, it's been the hosts who have offered significantly more in the attacking third.

Well wide

A deflected Oppie cross from the left finds its way to Pereira Lage on the left side of the box, who tries to guide the ball with his head in at the near post. He can't quite steer it enough, however, and it ends up well wide of the target.

Smith delivers

The Pauli No.8 fires in a cheeky, low ball along the ground from a corner from the right, which Heidenheim just manage to clear before Kaars can connect with his effort.

Fujita has been at the heart of everything good that Pauli have produced so far this afternoon.

First booking

Sands is the first player to go into the book this afternoon for a late arrival in on Föhrenbach.
22'

Irvine slips

Pauli are enjoying a good spell in attack at the moment, but they just can't convert their dominance into numerical advantage. This time, Fujita lays it left to Irvine on the edge of the box, who strikes first-time but slips at the crucial moment, sending it over the bar. Busch had done just enough to put him off...

So nearly the lead!

Irvine wriggles past a couple of midfielders before slipping Pereira Lage in behind. The forward manages to get a shot past the onrushing Ramaj, but Siersleben does excellently to come across and clear it off the line!
18'

Sands strikes

Kaars is sent up a blind alley in attack but does well to work the ball back to Fujita, who plays it to Sands to his right. The midfielder lets fly from the edge of the box, but it's straight into Ramaj's gloves.
camera-photo

Industrious early exchanges

Both sides are running hard in the opening phases here, but neither have so far managed to fashion any gilt-edged opportunities.
13'

Flashed across the face

A good move from the visitors sees Pieringer head the ball out wide to Beck, who delivers a first-time cross into the middle. Pieringer continues his run and gets on the end of it, but his header towards the far corner is wide of the mark, much to goalkeeper Vasilj's relief.
10'

Keller from distance

The defender latches onto a second ball after Pauli half-cleared a cross from Ibrahimović. He hits a powerful effort from around 30 yards but it's blocked at the edge of the box.
8'

First corner

Ibrahimović is sent in behind the Pauli backline with a chipped ball. The Bayern loanee tries to cut back onto his right foot by lifting the ball over Smith, but the Pauli No.8 deflects it out for a corner. Ibrahimović takes, but he doesn't beat the first man.
7'

Well claimed

Fujita plays a dangerous high ball into the Heidenheim box, but Ramaj takes the initiative early, coming off his line to claim the cross and defusing any further goal threat in the process.
4'

Overhit

The hosts find themselves in an advanced position. Sands tries to free Kaars with a ball in behind, but the midfielder puts too much mustard on it, sending it harmlessly behind for a Heidenheim goal-kick.

And we're off!

It's the visitors from Heidenheim who get us underway here in Hamburg.

More on that Heidenheim side

Frank Schmidt makes three changes to his starting XI which edged past Freiburg in a narrow 2-1 win last time out. Siersleben, Beck and Ibrahimović (pictured) all come back into the starting line-up, replacing Gimber, Dorsch and Honsak, all of whom take their places among the substitutes.

Early Heidenheim team news

Frank Schmidt has already revealed that striker Budu Zivzivadze faces a late fitness test to be included for this one. Sirlord Conteh is once again available, although it is not clear how much he will play, while a late decision will be made over Mikkel Kaufmann. Frank Feller and Leart Paqarada, however, are out.

Early Pauli team news

Blessin will be without David Nemeth and Simon Spari and Andréas Hountondji, but Hauke Wahl should be fit to start in defence after coming off at half-time against Cologne.
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing Heidenheim

"We have to show the willingness to make runs and open up spaces. It's a question of how risky we play in the first third and in midfield, and which areas we cover. It will be important that the runs are clear. We've worked out a few things about how we want to get into the final third. We see good opportunities there."
camera-photo

Frank Schmidt on facing St. Pauli

"It's a clash of two bottom-of-the-table teams. We have to be present from the start and give it our all. St. Pauli had a very good start, similar to ours last year. And now they're going through a very difficult period. We're aware that Pauli are aiming to beat us at home, but we're going to have to change that. We need to bring that same attitude, stability, and team spirit to the pitch at the Millerntor on Saturday. Then we'll have every chance of getting three points."
camera-photo

Pauli lacking punch

St. Pauli have failed to score in six of their 13 matches so far this season (only Mainz have fared worse than that) and have lost all of their past three home matches without scoring.
camera-photo

Dozen to dodge

As welcome as that point against Cologne was, Pauli are currently winless in 10 Bundesliga matches, with 12 the unwanted single-season club record to avoid. That happened in 2010/11, a campaign that ended in relegation to the second tier.

Six off the bench

Six of the 12 goals Heidenheim have scored this season have come from substitutes - including Stefan Schimmer's winner against Freiburg last weekend.
