FOUL THROW

A rare sight in professional football as Kossounou is penalised for a foul throw. He was almost in mid-air as he took it, to be fair. But the referee hasn't missed much today.
89'

WELL TIMED FROM SOARES

The Brazilian is one of the league leaders for tackles won and this one is well timed as he pinches the ball off Diaby inside the penalty area.

SHOULD WE SEE A GOAL?

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Bundesliga Match Facts show Leverkusen should have one at least, but that's taking into account the disallowed penalty.

NOT ENOUGH FROM BLUM

Great cross in from Gamboa. Blum gets between his markers and meets it with his head, but he was always too far out to trouble Hradecky.
84'

LEVERKUSEN OFF COLOUR

We're yet to see a goalless draw involving Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season. They've also now missed four of their six league penalties this term (Alario, Schick and Demirbay have previously missed), including each of the last three. That's twice as many as any other club.

"VFL! VFL! VFL!"

The home support are making their voices heard as they drive their team on for the final 10 minutes,

ZOLLER GETTING READY

The Ruhrstadion is chanting the name of Simon Zoller as the striker prepares to make his return after over 200 days out with a cruciate tear he suffered in training.
78'

TRIPLE CHANGE

Swiss coach Seoane sends on two Argentines and a Dutchman, also replacing earlier substitute Bellarabi with him hobbling.
75'

GOOD PLAY

Löwen tries to make amends for giving away the penalty as he's slipped in up the left. He flashes the ball across the face of goal - perhaps even going for goal himself - but there's no blue shirts up with him.
69'

MANUEL NEUER OR RIEMANN

The Bochum goalkeeper has faced three penalties in the Bundesliga and still never conceded. He saved the first two. This one obviously doesn't count either.
camera-photo

DIABY SLIPS!

Diaby puts the penalty away but it won't count. He slipped as he took it, knocking the ball onto his standing leg and in. The referee spots it immediately and rules out the goal.
64'

PENALTY!

Paulinho goes down under a challenge from Löwen - just seconds after coming on - and referee Zwayer immediately points to the spot.
63'

TIME FOR CHANGES

Thomas Reis decides first to opt for fresh legs, including sprinter Gerrit Holtmann.

DYNAMIC DIABY

information
DYNAMIC DIABY
The France international has been very assured in his passing today but we're yet to really see him get into the game and have an impact. He's had a direct hand in 21 of Leverkusen's 68 goals this season. The same total as Schick.

Immediate chance for Asano as he latches onto a knockdown on the edge of the box but he blazes over.

HALF-TIME

Diaby is trying to make a point to several of his teammates as the teams make their way off for the break. It's been a tight affair at the Ruhrstadion, with defences very much on top until those two late opportunities for the hosts.

POLTER!

There is the best chance. Great cross from Soares on his weaker right. Polter gets there ahead of everyone else at the far post but can't get any power behind his header and it bounces up to a grateful Hradecky.

OFF THE BAR!

Danilo Soares comes within inches of a first Bundesliga goal! The Brazilian cuts in from the left and goes with his weaker right foot. The effort takes a slight deflection, beating Hradecky up high, but crashing back off the crossbar. Closest we've come to a breakthrough.
41'

ATTACKING BAKKER

The substitute's average position is already far higher up the left wing than Hincapie was in the same position.
38'

CORNER ROUTINE

Bayer have been very good from set pieces this season. Demirbay's in-swinger - the first corner of the game actually - is deep but that's the plan with Hincapie peeling off at the far post, but his header back across is cut out.
36'

DEMIRBAY DENIED

Leverkusen suddenly flick the switch and burst into life. Demirbay is played in and he gets the ball on his stronger left foot left of centre, but the ball pops up kindly for Riemann.

CHANGE COMING

Hradecky collects a cross and is told by his teammate to put the ball out. Tah hits the deck and the change is coming. The Germany defender is holding his midriff but walking off.
28'

LIMPING TAH

The big Leverkusen centre-back is walking very gingerly after going down while clearing ahead of Polter. Mitchel Bakker has been called back from his warm-up.
25'

PANTOVIC IN...

The former Bayern man is in over the top but can't sort his feet as Hincapie recovers and forces a goal-kick. Flag then goes up for offside in any case.

PANTOVIC DELIVERS

Lovely ball from the right by Pantovic, asking his teammates to get on the end, but Polter and Asano are both caught on their heels and the ball whizzes through.

Pass Efficiency

information
Pass Efficiency
Pass Efficiency compares the number of successful passes with the number of passes expected to find another teammate. For this, every pass receives an AI-calculated probability to be a successful one. If a player has a positive Pass Efficiency value, he has brought more passes to his teammates than predicted.

CHANCE FOR PAULINHO

Schick pinches Bella-Kotchap's pocket and is in down the left. He cuts back to Paulinho central, who takes a touch onto his left foot and looks to let fly, but Bella-Kotchap makes amends with a well time slide.

SUPER DEFENDING

Last week's two-goal hero Asano takes down a long ball and threatens to run in on goal, but Tapsoba coolly follows him and pinches the ball off the Japanese forward's feet.

STRAIGHT UP THE OTHER END

The hosts fashion a chance of their own as Losilla is played in behind. He cuts the ball back to the six-yard box but two white Leverkusen shirts manage to slide in and intercept before the chance for a tap-in.
5'

SCHICK!

First attack of note results in a shot from the returning Schick after being picked out by Paulinho from the left, but the Czech's shot is miscued and straight at Riemann.

50 UP FOR ASANO

Takuma Asano makes his 50th Bundesliga appearance today, having also previously played for Stuttgart and Hannover. His brace last week doubled his goal tally from his first 48 Bundesliga games. Those two goals against Hoffenheim came with Hansi Flick in attendance. The Germany coach will have taken note ahead of their World Cup group meeting with Japan this winter.

WATCH: LEVERKUSEN 1-0 BOCHUM

Leverkusen haven’t lost to Bochum in five meetings since a 2-0 defeat here in March 2008. The reverse fixture this season was just a 1-0 victory for Bayer, which was an example of Leverkusen’s clinical finishing this season. They had an xG that day of 1.4 and are second in the division for xG efficiency – that’s the number of goals a team has scored compared to how many they should have based on probability – being 11 goals better off. On the other hand, Bochum failed to get anything from their 1.0 xG and have one of the worst efficiency ratings in the league, having nine goals fewer than expected.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SIGHT?

While safety is the order of the day for the hosts, Leverkusen are aiming to end their three-year absence from the Champions League. Even with Florian Wirtz out and top scorer Patrik Schick only just back, they are well placed in third with a six-point advantage over Freiburg in fifth. But that could all change quickly today with both teams, plus Leipzig (fourth) and Hoffenheim all in action.

ALREADY SAFE?

Coach Reis was the first to say that last week’s win does not mean Bochum are safe from relegation in their first season back at this level. But history says VfL may well be. They have 35 points to their name after 28 matchdays. No team has ever gone down what that total at this stage. They are also nine points clear of the drop zone/play-off spot. That’s also an advantage that’s never been squandered with six games to go.

LEVERKUSEN TEAM NEWS

Lucas Alario and Karim Bellarabi started and scored the goals as Leverkusen beat Hertha last week but both are on the bench this time. Patrik Schick comes in for his first start since the middle of February, while Kerem Demirbay is back from suspension and will likely play as the No.10 between Moussa Diaby and Paulinho. The only other switch is Piero Hincapie for Mitchel Bakker at left-back.

BOCHUM TEAM NEWS

It's perhaps no surprise to see Thomas Reis stick mostly with the team that started last weekend’s win at Hoffenheim. The only change sees Armel Bella-Kotchap replace Erhan Masovic in central defence. Kostas Stafylidis continues in his new holding midfield role, while Simon Zoller is back with the squad for the first time since September after tearing his cruciate ligament.
