Bayern keep pushing as the half-time whistle approaches and Coman dribbles forward down the left before flicking it inside to Lewandowski. He lets the ball roll across his body before smashing a swerving shot into the net from 20 yards out. A brilliant strike.

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has given his thoughts on facing the defending champions, aware that his side are the underdogs here: "The most important thing for me is that we fight and give it everything. Then we'll see where we stand. The chances are low of us picking up points, but we want to do everything we can to make it happen. We're focusing on our own strengths."

Today's hosts are unbeaten in their last seven games (two wins, five draws) and are the most attack-minded promoted side in eight years with 16 goals scored to date. VfB midfielder Wataru Endo is another to keep an eye on. The Japanese international has won more one-on-one duels than any other player in the Bundesliga this term (133). Like Gonzalez, he has just extended his contract until 2024.

Stuttgart may be without headline man Nicolas Gonzalez today and for the coming weeks, but in Silas Wamangituka they have a speed-demon in attack. The Congolese forward has clocked the fastest speed in the Bundesliga this season at 22mph.

The loss of Gonzalez to a knee injury is a heavy blow. The Argentina striker, who recently extended his contract until 2024, had just netted in successive outings against Schalke, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim, but will now be sidelined for several weeks. Sasa Kalajdzic is waiting on the bench as the Austria international has gone off the boil after his sizzling start to the season, failing to score in five matches, with Silas leading the attack. Left wing-back Borna Sosa also returns to the side with French teenager Tanguy Coulibaly on the other flank. Meanwhile, Philipp Förster starts for the first time this season.

Benjamin Pavard took a knock to his ankle against Salzburg but he starts against his former side, while fellow Frenchmen Lucas Hernandez and Corentin Tolisso slot back into the starting XI. Further up the pitch, Leroy Sane and Douglas Costa are both on the bench with Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry preferred on the wings. Alphonso Davies has returned to individual training but is unlikely to feature in the Bundesliga for at least several weeks, and possibly not until after the winter break.
