Cottbus secure an impressive victory against Hannover. The hosts took the lead via a deflected free-kick, Hannover then took control, equalised and should have gone into the break in front. Due to a moment of carelessness from the 96ers, Cottbus retook the lead. After that, Hannover fell apart completely and conceded a third goal. The match winner today – despite Cigerci's brace – is without doubt goalkeeper Lotka.

In April 2012, Leonardo Bittencourt last turned out for Energie, when he was just 18 years old. 5,224 days later, he is stepping onto the pitch for Cottbus for the first time again.

Professional debut for Zaydan

The 19-year-old left back is the big winner of the pre-season at Cottbus having taken advantage of captain Borgmann's injury absence, making a lasting impression at left back. Today Zaydan starts, having not yet played a single competitive match for the first team!

At Energie, Lotka is the new number 1 and successor to Funk, the promotion hero who departed to VfB Stuttgart. Top talent Erlein, on loan from Leverkusen, immediately gets to showcase his versatility, as the regular right back starts in a central position. Also new to the side are returning players Bittencourt (pictured) and Copado.

With new keeper Loretz and centre-back Hugonet (whom Titz knows from Magdeburg), there are two new signings in Hannover's starting eleven. Making another attempt is Gindorf, who was loaned out to Aachen last season and finished as top scorer in 3. Liga with 28 goals.

Energie hold the edge

That cup success is one of eight Cottbus wins over Hannover, who have won six of the teams’ 16 encounters to date. The last of those victories came in May 2008, when the Reds triumphed 4-0 at home on the final day of the 2007/08 campaign.

Cottbus 1-0 Hannover - previous meeting

These teams have only met once since Cottbus’ relegation from the Bundesliga at the end of the 2008/09 campaign. The east German club triumphed 1-0 in the first round of last season’s DFB Cup, with Tolcay Ciğerci scoring the game’s only goal.
