Full-time: Schalke 2-2 HSV
Schalke initially impressed after the early sending-off, then remained calm after falling behind against visitors who, although better, made too little of their numerical advantage. In the closing stages, the hosts threw everything forward and were rewarded with the equaliser. A draw at the end is quite deserved.

Deep block
Schalke are positioned with all their men around their own penalty area. Hardly any way through for HSV! Elfadli gets to the ball again, but his shot lands directly in the arms of Heekeren.

HSV are trying everything...
...but they're not creating any more chances! Crosses are now sailing into the opposition penalty area, which the home side are defending confidently.

Almost the lead!
...Højlund gets his head to the ball on the end of the free-kick, which Fernandes can only punch away rather poorly. Over the bar!

Schalke on the advance
Since the equaliser, Schalke have twigged that HSV are vulnerable! As soon as the home side win the ball, they quickly move forward. Now they have a free-kick from the right touchline...
88'
No shot
Selke and Karabec pass the ball back and forth several times in the penalty area, but without gaining any ground. Schalke eventually clear the situation.
86'
Sylla in form
The striker scored his 15th goal of the season, with eight of those coming in his last 10 appearances.

Schalke's final offensive
Since the 73rd minute, Schalke have had 6 shots on goal to HSV's 1; HSV made too little of their numerical advantage.
85'
Substitutions on both sides again!
The final phase should be intense, HSV really must leave the pitch with a win. Anything else would be a bitter disappointment.
82'
Sylla with the equaliser!
Incredible, hardly any chances, and now the goal!
79'
Schalke free-kick
Mikelbrencis Mohr down, resulting in a free-kick for the home side from the left flank. Subsequently, Schalke get two headers, but both are too tameand play continues with a goal-kick for HSV.
77'
Counter-attack opportunity
Dompé has the opportunity to counter-attack and runs relatively free towards the opposition goal. Then he takes a bit too long; Selke still manages to get to the ball, but then loses it without even getting a shot away.
75'
Strong Sahiti
Sahiti simply cannot be stopped today. He freed himself from 78 per cent of situations under opponent pressure (18). Additionally, all of his passes under opponent pressure have found their target.
73'
Huge chance for Selke!
And Mikelbrencis is involved again, perfectly crossing the ball behind the backline. In the penalty area, Selke dives in acrobatically and his flying header hits the crossbar – but it would likely have been offside anyway.

A long cross is almost lost, but then Mikelbrencis manages to control the ball down with his chest. However, his subsequent shot goes well over the bar.

Karabec!
After a clever ball from Sahiti, Karabec suddenly finds himself free in front of Heekeren. He seems somewhat surprised and waits too long but fails to beat the keeper!

The stewards are collecting fireworks from the pitch, play has not yet resumed.

Danger!
Meffert wins the ball back thanks to some good pressing and immediately sends it to Dompé, who serves Selke. His shot is blocked and falls back to Dompé – but his effort wide!

Double substitution
Schalke make two changes. It's hard to imagine that they can still turn this around. The game is currently going in only one direction.
56'
Yellow card for both
Hadžikadunić goes in on Sylla with a hard tackle, who doesn't find it funny at all. Both engage in some verbal exchanges and provocations, resulting in both being shown yellow cards.

Half-time: Schalke 1-2 HSV
It's been a rollercoaster here in Schalke. Karaman saw red right at the beginning but the decimated hosts played the more courageous football afterwards and rewarded themselves with a goal. HSV initially looked unsettled, but then grew stronger. Just before the break came the double strike; with goals in the 41st and 43rd minute, HSV turned the match around.

Away again in front of a large crowd
Emir Sahiti has scored his second and third goals of the season today. His only previous one came on Matchday 19 against Hertha in Berlin. That was in front of 71,500 spectators; today it was in front of 62,000.
43'
It counts! Hamburg lead!
No offside after all, it was a correctly – and by the way very beautifully – worked goal. Dompe serves Königsdörffer with a through-ball, allowing the striker to run into the penalty area and then play it to arriving Sahiti, who just has to tap it in to make it 2-1!

The equaliser from Sahiti!
Hamburg have been growing stronger and now they have found a reward! Sahiti scores the header after Dompe delivers a perfect cross to the far post.

Lack of assertiveness
No Hamburg midfielder or striker has won more than half of their duels. Schalke have the league leaders fully under control in the challenges.

Another ball into the box
Mikelbrencis crosses into the box from in off the touchline relatively far from goal. Königsdörffer finds it difficult to control the ball with his back to goal and play thus continues with a goal-kick.
32'
Huge chance for Hamburg!
Reis does it brilliantly! He takes down a high ball from the right in one motion, turns and volleys it. All this takes place inside the penalty area within close proximity to the goal, but the ball narrowly whistles past the left post.
32'
Corner for Schalke...
...and it's not without danger! Sylla's header goes just wide.

Hamburg under pressure?
Pherai plays a ball behind Dompe. No danger comes from it, but Hamburg are looking a bit sloppy here.
27'
Aiming high
Mikelbrencis attempts a shot from distance – but it flies well, well over the bar.
26'
Electric atmosphere
No further penalty area action to report at the moment, but the fans are getting involved with every tackle. There's a real atmosphere here for this floodlit thriller!
22'
And yet!
Now Hamburg are lookingdangerous! In the penalty area, Meffert plays a great backheel to Sahiti, who shoots too late. A Schalke leg gets in the way just in time, and then both Pherai and Königsdörffer arrive for the second ball - a second too late. This is better from the league leaders.
20'
No danger
Königsdörffer is offside when a cross is fired in, but he was too late to reach the ball anyway.
20'
Aerial prowess
That was Ron Schallenberg's 10th second division goal, and his sixth (second this season) from a header.
19'
Dompe crosses...
...but finds no taker. Schalke have the ball again.
18'
Incredible start
The fans have already seen four cards - one of them red - and a goal. Schalke are leading with ten men, while Hamburg are currently looking relatively toothless. It was Schalke's fifth shot that led to the 1-0, whereas Hamburg have only had one attempt. Despite being a man down, Schalke are completely dominating their visitors.
15'
Goooooal, 1-0!
A man down? Doesn't matter! It's 1-0 to Schalke!
15'
Another card
Hefti is also shown a yellow card for impeding Aydin just before he enters the penalty area.
13'
Booking
Pherai receives a yellow card for a harsh challenge near the edge of the penalty area.
10'
Promotion beckoning for Hamburg
A lucky start for the visitors. Against ten men, they now have the chance to increase their lead on the table - promotion is getting ever closer. On the pitch, however, the men are still approaching it with typical Hanseatic calm. Meaning: no chances so far.
9'
Almost a goal for Schalke!
After a long free-kick finds Mohr, he tees up Sylla in the middle. He's completely unmarked in front of Fernandes - but the Hamburg keeper saves! Huge chance!
6'
How will Schalke react?
The home side need to regroup after seeing their forward sent off. Hamburg are passing the ball around, still biding their time.
4'
Seguin cautioned
It's somewhat overlooked, but Seguin also picked up a yellow card for complaining to Osmers while he was reviewing the incident on the screen.
3'
Quick red card!
Referee Osmers reviews the scene again and it becomes clear: Karaman catches Meffert above the ankle, sliding in with full force. Certainly not intentional, but that's a red card.
2'
Lively start
It's a fast-paced start, with several small fouls already. Karaman is cautioned after a strong challenge on Meffert in midfield. He caught him right on the ankle there.

キックオフ
Big chance for HSV
As was the case on Matchday 29, other results have gone in favour of promotion-hunting Hamburg this weekend, and a win over Schalke would all but guarantee the Red Shorts' chances of top-flight football next season. On top of that, they will be out to get back to winning ways after last week's defeat to Braunschweig, as Hamburg have not lost twice in a row this season.
Chance for Pherai
Skilful playmaker Immanuel Pherai is starting for the first time since Matchday 18 (when Schalke beat Köln 1-0 in mid-January), after which he was injured for a longer period and then only used as a substitute.
Not Selke dependent
Before today's match, Selke has been absent (not in the squad or on the bench) from Hamburg's starting line-up ten times this season, and Hamburg went unbeaten ion every occasion (six wins, four draws).
The substitutions at HSV
Back in the team for HSV are three previously injured key players with Hadžikadunić, Meffert and Reis, plus Pherai and Königsdörffer are in the starting line-up. Out are captain Schonlau, Karabec, Poręba, Richter and top scorer Selke (all on the bench).
Plenty of changes for Hamburg
For Hamburg, there are five changes to the starting XI from the loss to Braunschweig. There has only been one previous occasion with more changes from match to match Hamburg a second division season (in the early phase of the 2018/19 season).
Mohr gets another chance
Tobias Mohr starts in a second division match for the first time since Matchday 22, when Schalke beat Karlsruhe.
Chance for Grüger
The youngster is in the Schalke starting eleven for the first time since 9 February, when Schalke lost 0-1 in Cologne on Matchday 21.
Three changes for Schalke
Compared to the bitter defeat against bottom club Regensburg, there are three changes to Schalke's starting XI: Murkin, Grüger and Mohr come in, replacing Donkor, Barkok and Younes (all on the bench).
Hamburg's starting XI
Fernandes - Mikelbrencis, Hadžikadunić, Elfadli, Hefti - Meffert - Pherai, Reis - Sahiti, Königsdörffer, Dompe
Schalke's starting XI
Heekeren - Bulut, Schallenberg, Kaminski, Murkin - Grüger, Seguin - Aydin, Karaman, Mohr - Sylla
What Polzin says
"At the start of the week, we analysed and reviewed the match against Braunschweig. But then we quickly shifted our focus completely to the upcoming match and have trained intensively and well this week as well."
What van Wonderen says
"This is a great match, two big clubs facing each other. Hamburg have a lot of quality on the pitch, we are preparing for a strong opponent. After the last match, we want to send a signal."
Schalke's last championship title
Schalke celebrated their last German title in 1958 with a 3-0 final victory against Hamburg in Hannover.
Polzin takeover
In the first leg of the current season, Schalke equalised after being 0-2 down at half-time. For Hamburg, it was the last match under Steffen Baumgart, after which Merlin Polzin took over.
2017 the last Schalke victory
Schalke have been without a win in six competitive matches against Hamburg, the last three points came in a 2-0 home victory in the Bundesliga in November 2017 under manager Domenico Tedesco. Schalke finished as runners-up that season, while HSV were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time.
Unbeaten Hamburg
Hamburg have never lost in their previous five second-division matches against Schalke, collecting eleven points (three wins, two draws). Hamburg have won both away fixtures in Gelsenkirchen.
Pure tradition!
In the Bundesliga, there have been exactly 100 encounters between Schalke and Hamburg (38 wins each), and now they're meeting for the sixth time in the Bundesliga 2.
