Full-time: Kaiserslautern 3-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf

Kaiserslautern celebrate an important home victory as they jump up to third place. After a dominant first half, Oberdorf briefly gave Fortuna hope, but Ache and Sirch ultimately sealed a well-deserved win for the Red Devils.

A third for Latuern!

Kaiserslautern have surely won it! Zimmermann loses possession in front of his own penalty area, and the ball finds its way to Sirch in the box via a roundabout route. His first attempt is blocked, but he smashes into the net on the rebound to make it 3-1. That should seal it!

Niemiec breaks through on the left side at the byline and drills the ball back into the penalty area. The Polish striker comes rushing in and, under pressure, blasts well over the bar.

The winning goal?

Ragnar Ache heads in to make it 2-1 for Lautern.
81'

He must score that!

That should have been 2-2! Zimmermann drives the ball forward and slips it through to van Brederode in the penalty area, who is pushed slightly to the left but still looks for the finish in front of Simoni. His shot goes into the side netting on the left, but there was definitely more in it. Perhaps a pass to the middle to Kownacki, who had made a supporting run, would have been better.
80'

The goalscorer departs

With the next substitutions, Ragnar Ache also leaves the pitch, limping slightly. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Heuer is now on in his place.
76'

Corner specialists

For Kaiserslautern, it was a league-high seventh goal from a corner. For Düsseldorf, just like for Lautern earlier, it was also the sixth goal conceded from a corner.
75'

Substitutions on both sides

Now both managers are making their first changes.
73'

Lautern lead again!

Out of nowhere, the hosts are in front again. A corner from Kleinhansl finds Ache, who is unmarked. His bouncing header - truly superbly executed - finds the top right corner. A beautiful goal and it's 2-1 now.

How will the home side react?

Kaiserslautern have now truly let the game slip from their grasp, but will the 'Red Devils' find their way back to their first-half performance?
60'

The equaliser!

It had been hinted at a bit recently, and now it has arrived. A corner from Appelkamp on the right side is flicked on by Siebert in the middle towards the far post. There, both Oberdorf and Kownacki jump towards the ball, and in the end, it's the former who scores with the tip of his boot.

Siebert with a header

The defender directs the corner towards goal with his head, but it's no problem for Simoni.

Düsseldorf pressing forward

Jóhannesson breaks through on the right flank and plays a dangerous ball across the Lautern goal, where Bauer clears it for a corner with a sliding tackle.
50'

Simoni tested

The Lautern keeper can only clear a Fortuna corner with a punch, but the visitors' second wave fizzles out. Will this be counted as the first shot on target for the visitors? In the first half, they had none at all, for the first time since losing 3-0 against Hannover in October 2020.
48'

That was close!

A shot from Ache from 18 metres out in a central position goes just wide of the left-hand post. As it was slightly deflected by Siebert, play continues with a corner. However, it doesn't create any danger.

Peeeep!

The match has resumed, with neither team making any substitutions at half-time.

Half-time: Lautern 1-0 Düsseldorf

After an uneventful opening period, the Red Devils' goal brought plenty of fire to the match. The home side were significantly the better team and deservedly took the lead but were unfortunate to have a second goal disallowed due to a handball. Fortuna will need a clear improvement in performance after the break to take anything from this match.

Three minutes added

The spectators at the Betzenberg get a small bonus of 180 seconds.
44'

Harmless

Heyer receives a dead leg on the right flank and stays down briefly. As a foul was committed, play continues with a free-kick for Fortuna. The set-piece, delivered as a cross, poses no significant challenge for Simoni in goal and is comfortably collected by the Albanian.

Man of the first half?

Marlon Ritter celebrates his goal to make it 1-0, but he was also one of the most noticeable players on the pitch in the first half. Incidentally, he has scored three times in the last four encounters against his former club.
38'

First yellow card for Lautern

Ritter commits a foul on Kownacki in midfield, now the first Kaiserslautern player is also cautioned by referee Dr. Burda.
35'

Another suspension!

Oberdorf brings down Ritter in midfield and receives a booking for it. It's also his fifth yellow card, meaning he too will be suspended for next week's match against Münster.

Handball prevents another goal!

After a corner from Sirch, Elvedi heads the ball against the right-hand post, but gets a second chance following another high cross from the right. This time he does better and heads in for what appears to be the second goal of the game. However, as Hanslik touched the ball with his hand in between, the goal is disallowed after VAR intervention.

After Düsseldorf's Hoffmann collides with goalkeeper Kastenmeier, the captain holds his shoulder and requires brief treatment. However, he is able to continue.

Although Lautern are clearly dominating the match and are in the lead, Düsseldorf need seven seconds fewer to regain possession of the ball, according to the match data.

Too central

Ache turns with the ball at his feet in midfield, spinning around opponent Hoffmann, and finds plenty of space ahead. The striker makes good ground for a few metres and then lets fly from about 18 metres out. However, his centrally placed shot goes straight into the arms of Kastenmeier.
21'

The hosts continue to press

Düsseldorf are struggling to get back into the game. After a pass from Redondo, Ache blasts the ball over the crossbar from just a few metres out. However, there was an offside position beforehand, so play is brought back.
19'

That's a suspension

Zimmermann receives a yellow card for a foul in front of his own penalty area. As it's his fifth of the season, he will have to sit out next week's match against Preußen Münster.
18'

Ritter rocks

It was the midfielder's sixth goal of the season - five of which have come after the winter break. Interestingly, whenever Ritter has scored, Lautern have always won.
15'

Yellow card as well

While Lautern celebrate, Jóhannesson is shown the yellow card belatedly for his foul.
14'

The hosts take the lead

Just seconds after Ache's missed chance, the home side score the opener. Ache wins the ball in a challenge with Jóhannesson in front of the penalty area - although the Düsseldorf player commits a foul in the process - and Ritter, the beneficiary, scores from about 19 metres with a low shot into the bottom left corner!

Ritter with a brilliant run and an even better cross from the right side, but Ache heads the ball just wide of the right-hand post.
10'

No big risks yet

There haven't been any real penalty area incidents yet, and the term 'balanced' quite aptly describes the action in the opening minutes. Much of the play is taking place in midfield, with both teams maintaining discipline and actively pressing when not in possession.
7'

Blocked

Redondo has the ball at the right corner of the penalty area and wants to cross it into the middle, but Siebert blocks it with his upper body.
5'

Simoni called into action

Fridriksson delivers a high cross from the left into the Lautern penalty area, but Simoni is there and plucks the ball confidently out of the air. An important first touch for the 20-year-old keeper, which will boost his confidence.
3'

First goal attempt

Oberdorf wins the first corner of the match on the right side. However, the home team manage to clear it.

Kick-off

The ball is rolling and Kaiserslautern - playing entirely in red - have kicked off. Düsseldorf are in white.
キックオフ

Crucial encounter

In this clash between the chasing pack, there are some big points up for grabs. Kaiserslautern would jump to third place with a win, while Düsseldorf could make a significant leap from ninth to fourth.

Empty spots on the bench

Due to the many absentees, two seats remain empty on the Fortuna bench. Apart from van Brederode and Niemiec, there are five players from the U23 squad, who collectively have only one minute of first-team experience. Leonard Brodersen and Deniz Bindemann are with the pros for the very first time.

Personnel concerns for Düsseldorf

Daniel Thioune has to do without 11 injured players, including Vermeij, Iyoha and Gavory, three players who were recently in the starting line-up. Jamil Siebert is back after suspension and Valgeir Fridriksson is fit again after missing two matches. Additionally, Danny Schmidt starts for the first time since November.

Goalkeeper change for the hosts

For the first time this season, Lautern start without regular keeper Julian Krahl, who is injured. Simon Simoni, who recently made his second-tier debut in stoppage time in Paderborn, stands between the posts. Additionally, former Düsseldorf player Marlon Ritter returns after suspension, with Filip Kaloc making way.

Fortuna starting XI

Kastenmeier - Oberdorf, Hoffmann, Siebert - Fridriksson, Johannesson, Zimmermann, Heyer - Schmidt, Appelkamp - Kownacki

Kaiserslautern starting XI

Simoni - Elvedi, Sirch, Bauer - Zimmer, Breithaupt, Ritter, Kleinhansl - Redondo, Hanslik - Ache

What Daniel Thioune says

"We are facing a challenging task. Since Markus Anfang took over the team, a clear development is noticeable. They play good football and have a lot of depth in their squad. Kaiserslautern have particularly good qualities in their transition play, which we have prepared for intensively."

What Markus Anfang says

"Our goals remain to improve and develop further. Of course, we're not closing ourselves off to short-term success; we want to win the match against Düsseldorf. But we know how tight everything is, as the first leg also showed."

Former Düsseldorf players

On Kaiserslautern's side, manager Markus Anfang (37 Bundesliga appearances for Fortuna), Jean Zimmer (promoted with Düsseldorf as Bundesliga 2 champions in 2018) and Marlon Ritter (played his first five Bundesliga 2 matches for Fortuna in 2016/17) have a Düsseldorf past.

Fortuna's favourite stadium

Düsseldorf have won their last four competitive matches at the Betzenberg, scoring at least three goals each time (3-1, 3-0, 5-2, 3-1). Kaiserslautern's only victory in their last nine home games against Fortuna was a 3-0 win in October 2015 in the Bundesliga 2.

Plenty of action

In the last six competitive matches between both teams, 31 goals were scored. In the first leg of the current season, Kaiserslautern won 4-3 in Düsseldorf, with Daniel Hanslik being the man of the match with two goals and an assist.

Bundesliga history

The last of the 42 Bundesliga encounters between Lautern and Fortuna took place in April 1996. Since then, the two teams have faced each other 17 times in the Bundesliga 2 and once in the DFB-Pokal, with Düsseldorf celebrating ten victories and losing only three times in these 18 matches.
