Day of Remembrance in German Football

80 years ago, on January 27, 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has been commemorating this event and the people who were persecuted, deported and murdered by the National Socialists on match days in and around around January 27th.

Both sides make their way out onto the turf on a bright winter's day in Frankfurt. Conditions are perfect for football and we're all set to go.

The home scarves are raised as Eintracht's anthem belts out around the Deutsche Bank Park. All that's left is for the teams to take to the field.

Danish feel

There are six Danes among today's match squads, and three will start this game, namely Eintracht's Oscar Højlund and Joakim Maehle and Jonas Wind of Wolfsburg. Frankfurt's Rasmus Kristensen and the Wolves' winter signings Mads Roerslev and Andreas Skov Olsen are among the day's subs.

Frankfurt may stil be waiting for Omar Marmoush's replacement Elye Wahi to make his debut for the Eagles but in the meantime they can rely on another Frenchman - the sensational Hugo Ekitiké, who has scored four goals in the last three Bundesliga matches!

Wolfsburg also underlined their strength from set-pieces in the last game against Kiel, scoring from a corner for the sixth time this season – the highest number in the league. However, the Wolves are also vulnerable from opposition corners, having conceded eight goals in a row from corners at home. Further transparency when it comes to refereeing decisions - with this goal in mind, a pilot project for announcing referee decisions in the stadium will be launched for both the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 on Matchday 20. The trial includes today clash between Bayern and Kiel.

Wolfsburg goals (almost) guaranteed

The Wolves have not gone a whole game without scoring against Frankfurt in the last 24 games – they currently have a longer unbeaten streak against no other Bundesliga team. Which should suit Jonas Wind, the Wolves' top scorer with eight goals (plus three assists), who has scored five times in his last seven Bundesliga games and is currently combining well with Mohamed Amoura.
