Full-time: Leipzig 4-1 Dortmund

Leipzig further strengthen their grip on the top four with an eventually dominant win over Dortmund. Now five points clear of BVB with three to play, it's Leipzig's to lose and Marco Rose will be delighted. All of his big guns turned up in a comprehensive display against a Dortmund side that were dangerous throughout, but just not on the same level as their victors today.

How's that not gone in?!

A corner is flicked on by Wolff and it must have been too fast for Fullkrug who fails to direct the ball in from just a few yards out.

Triple sub

There's a very well-earned standing ovation at the Red Bull Arena as Openda, Schlager and Haidara come off after a brilliant shift from each of them.

Brilliant defending

Fullkrug sets up for a far-post header but in flies Haidara to clear the cross with his head at the last moment. He celebrates a great clearance right in front of the Germany international and things get heated.

4-1!

That looks like the three points for Leipzig. A swift attack sees Henrichs found in the box and his pass into Baumgartner is collected and prodded home by the Austrian substitute.

Half-time: Leipzig 2-1 Dortmund

There was plenty of hope this match would be a cracker and the opening 45 minutes certainly didn't disappoint. An end-to-end affair was punctured by a sublime Jadon Sancho opener but BVB's lead lasted just three minutes before Openda found the net and Sesko later doubled it. There's individual battles all over the pitch and so far Leipzig are winning them, who knows what will happen after the break...

Familiar foes

Leipzig manager Marco Rose's previous job in management was in the Dortmund dugout for the 2021/22 season. His spell was best remembered for the performances of Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, but there will be plenty of familiar faces opposing him in black and yellow.

Away specialists

Dortmund are currently on a hot streak away from home, the Black-and-Yellows unbeaten in their last ten in the German top flight. That's the second-longest such sequence in the club's history.
camera-photo

Best right now

Since the beginning of March, Leipzig have won 19 of a possible 21 points thanks to six wins and a draw from seven games. That makes Marco Rose's side the best in the Bundesliga over that period.
camera-photo

Rose's view on Dortmund

"Dortmund have incredible offensive power, good 1-on-1 players on the wing and good players in midfield. We really have to defend a lot and well, we have to cover a lot of ground. Marcel Sabitzer has developed into a leader and conductor in the last few games. He is in absolutely top form. Mats Hummels keeps the boys together at the back. They're in form and in Champions League shape, but we know where they are vulnerable and we know our own strengths."

Terzić on facing Leipzig

"The full focus is on the task in Leipzig. They're quality is undisputed, they've been doing a good job for years. They are an extremely pacey team, especially up front, and are always dangerous when they have space to run into, but we've been conceding a lot less goals in 2024. We want to overtake them in the table."

Advantage Leipzig?

Die Roten Bullen have won five of their last six competitive meetings with Dortmund; however, BVB have finished above Leipzig in five of the last seven seasons.

High stakes

... although potentially not as high as previously thought. Usually it's only the top four teams that earn a place in the UEFA Champions League, but given that the tournament is expanding its format next season - and thanks to Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen enjoying deep runs in European competition this term - Germany are on course to secure a fifth Champions League spot thanks to their UEFA coefficient ranking. As it stands, that would mean both of these teams will make the Champions League - with sixth-placed Frankfurt 12 points further back.
