Full time: Hamburg 1-2 Karlsruhe

A very important victory for KSC, and not undeserved based on the chances they had. Hamburg found the accelerator too late and leave the pitch as losers.

Stange hits the woodwork!

It's Dompé again, this time delivering a cross from the left. Stange rises higher than everyone else but heads it onto the bar.

Schleusener can do it!

The KSC plays their way into the Hamburg penalty area once more, the substitute has the ball on the half-right and is ready to shoot. But a HSV defender has other ideas and nicks the ball off his foot.

Karlsruhe showing plenty of experience

You have to give credit to the visitors: they're keeping the ball in Hamburg's half and repeatedly drawing minor fouls. Now they have a throw-in near the corner flag.

Heußer clears the ball away

Clear yellow card for the substitute. To prevent a free kick in midfield, he kicks the ball away.

Dompé is not that fast either...

You don't see that often: Reis attempts a through ball to his teammate, but the pass is too heavy and Dompé doesnt have the legs to reach it.
85'

Fresh legs in attack

Conté had a big chance against Heuer Fernandes just after the break, but looks to be running out of steam now. Hunziker could bring some spark to the KSC attack.

Hamburg under pressure

Can Hamburg still equalise? The last match that they won after being behind at half-time was the 5-3 victory over Schalke in July 2023 (1-2 at half-time).

Off the post!

Dompé has a lot of space on the left side and crosses to the far post. Glatzel is able to control the ball with his chest but smashes it against the woodwork. Weiß had no chance of saving it.
80'

Wasted opportunity

Karlsruhe manage to break free from the pressure and Herold drives the ball forward. At the edge of the penalty area, he seemingly runs out of steam and plays an inaccurate back pass. Conté had made a supporting run through the middle and would have been in a great position to shoot...
78'

Dompé has a crack

Nice one-two between the winger and Reis on the left side. Dompé cuts inside from the left and aims for the top right corner. His shot, however, goes wide of the goal.
76'

No lack of commitment

You certainly can't accuse Hamburg of lacking the will to win. They're winning more tackles and are better in direct duels. They're just lacking punch in front of goal!

All-out attack

Coach Polzin wants to go for it now. He brings on two strikers - Glatzel and Königsdörffer will likely operate as a strike partnership, with Reis dropping back to a holding midfield position.
69'

Withstanding the pressure

Karlsruhe are managing to close down the midfield very well, but they haven't been able to completely control Reis so far. The orchestrator in the centre has already managed to retain possession 20 times under pressure.

Another Yellow Card

The classic tactical foul. Jensen chases after Sahiti in midfield following a turnover and brings him down.

Burnić forced off injured

The right winger twists his ankle in a midfield challenge and limps off the pitch. His replacement Heußer should prove to be a similar dynamic presence.

Hamburg with a free-kick

Dompé places the ball in the right half-space, about 30 metres from the goal. He looks for a teammate at the far post, but it's unclear who he's aiming for and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.

Will Karlsruhe still be celebrating after the final whistle?

Karlsruhe managed re-take the lead just before half-time. Can they protect their advantage until the final whistle?
57'

Unrest in the stands

The match has calmed down a bit now, but this calm is accompanied by some whistles from the fans - notably following a cross to nowhere from Hamburg. The fans want more from their team here!
53'

Almost the equaliser!

It's back and forth at the Volkspark! Sahiti powers through on the right, lays the ball back. Weiß just manages to clear Karabec's shot with his foot.
51'

Post!

What's going on now?! Just seconds after Conté's chance, Ben Farhat gets the ball in the penalty area. From about seven metres out, he smashes the ball against the post from a half-right position. Hamburg got lucky there.
51'

Conté with a huge chance!

It's another counter-attack from the visitors. Jensen wins a header in midfield and suddenly Conté has a lot of space in front of him. In the end, he fails to beat Heuer Fernandes in the one-on-one.
48'

Shot by Sahiti

Lively start from Hamburg. The right winger powers his way into the penalty area and gets a shot away. However, it lands just wide of the right post.

We're back!

If the second half continues as the first one ended, we can look forward to a football feast.
Coup d’envoi!

Half-time: Hamburg 1-2 Karlsruhe

After a slow start at the Volkspark, the final phase of the first half was action-packed. First, Selke equalised from the spot after KSC had taken the lead. In stoppage time, the visitors nearly conceded to make it 1-2, but they managed to take the lead with a counter-attack of their own. A thrilling second half is on the cards!

Wanitzek puts KSC back in front!

Wanitzek drives from the left into the penalty area, and from the scramble, the ball lands for Ben Farhat. As he looks for a teammate, defender Mikelbrencis pokes the ball back towards his own goal. Therefore, it's not a new play situation and Wanitzek is not offside. Karlsruhe are in the lead again!

Reis with a huge chance!

What kind of error was that from Weiß?! The keeper plays a sloppy pass into the centre, which the Hamburg player intercepts. However, his effort on goal is wayward. That was a good opportunity.
45'

Burnić too hasty

Karlsruhe play it quickly forward again. Burnić has the ball on his left foot, but his finish is toothless and lands right in the arms of Heuer Fernandes.
45'

Selke reliable on the spot

That was his fourth penalty this season, and the ball is in the back of the net for a third time. He has only missed one this campaign - in Regensburg.
42'

Hamburg level it up!

Karabec cuts in from the left wing into the penalty area and is fouled. After a brief review, Selke steps up and smashes his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner. Back to square one!

Quick counter-attack by Hamburg

Heuer Fernandes impressively sends a corner forward to Mikelbrencis. He plays it through to Sahiti, but his cross doesn't find a teammate.
36'

Karlsruhe threaten again

Hamburg are really having problems with the counter-attacks from the visitors. Herold is brought down just before the byline on the left side. Wanitzek's free-kick flies past friend and foe at the far post.
34'

What will Hamburg's response look like?

Sahiti has plenty of space on the right wing and could actually go a few more metres or make a run to the byline with Karabec. Instead, he crosses the ball straight into the arms of KSC keeper Weiß. Telling.
31'

Goooooal for Karlsruhe!

Cold shower for Hamburg. After a throw-in from their own half, Karlsruhe play forward. From the left, Conté crosses to Ben Ferhat. The 19-year-old makes a quick cut inside and finishes clinically with his right foot into the bottom-left corner.

Deserved yellow

Elfadli arrives late in midfield against Burnić and rightly receives the yellow card. This could become interesting for the defender as the match progresses.
26'

Not much happening yet

Although there have been good counter-attacking moves from both Hamburg and Karlsruhe, they haven't always resulted in shots on goal. Cutting edge is still lacking.

Selke and Dompé combine

Now Hamburg have a bit of space. On the counter, Selke holds onto the ball and manages to lay it off to Dompé in the middle. The winger dribbles into the penalty area, but his finish from a half-right position poses no real danger.
20'

First sign of intent from Selke

Hamburg's top scorer receives the ball in a good position! Sahiti powers through on the right, lays it back, but Selke can't control it. Beifus stands ready to clear.
camera-photo

Contested start

Neither Hamburg nor Karlsruhe have been able to create any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. The match is primarily taking place between the penalty areas.
16'

What can Karlsruhe cook up here?

So far, it's mainly counter-attacks coming from the visitors. After winning the ball, they quickly move down the left flank, where Wanitzek is often sought out.
13'

Sahiti from distance

Reis wins the ball high up on the right wing and lays it off to Sahiti, who cuts inside. His left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area is too weak and lacks the accuracy to trouble Weiß in the KSC goal.
12'

Hamburg now striving for control

After that wild start, Hamburg are now much more frequently in controlled possession of the ball. Dompé is the danger man in the final third.
8'

Elfadli down

Karlsruhe try to attack down the right flank with a long ball. In the foot race, the Hamburg player is quicker than Conté. However, during the clearance, he falls awkwardly on his left arm and requires treatment.
6'

Burnić again

A Hamburg corner turns into a boomerang. KSC quickly counter-attack, and again it's Wanitzek who delivers a cross from the left. And again Burnić gets to the ball. This time his attempt from the edge of the box is blocked.
4'

The first chance of the match

It falls for KSC. Wanitzek crosses from the left into the penalty area, but the delivery is intercepted. Burnić picks up the rebound. His volley flies well over the crossbar.
3'

Long live football

In the opening minutes, the ball hardly touches the ground. Many long balls from both sides.
1'

Let's go!

The ball is rolling at the Volkspark. Karlsruhe, decked out in black, kick off against the hosts in their emblematic red shorts.
Coup d’envoi!

Karlsruhe without Franke

The visitors have to do without their defensive leader Marcel Franke, but Sebastian Jung is back, as are Nicolai Rapp and David Herold, who started on the bench in the last match. They replace Lilian Egloff and Rafael Pinto Pedrosa in the team.

Selke starts

The league's top scorer returns to the starting line-up, replacing Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer. Also new to the team compared to last week is Adam Karabec, who gets the nod ahead of Immanuel Pherai.

Karlsruhe starting XI

Weiß - Kobald, Herold, Beifus - Jung, Rapp, Burnić - Jensen, Wanitzek - Conté, Ben Farhat

Hamburg starting XI

Heuer Fernandes - Mikelbrencis, Hadžikadunić, Elfadli, Hefti - Karabec, Meffert, Reis - Sahiti, Selke, Dompé

Christian Eichner's thoughts on facing Hamburg

"We're travelling to Hamburg with a large portion of optimism and want to create a similarly open match as in recent years!"

Merlin Polzin's thoughts on facing Karlsruhe

"We're facing a different opponent than Schalke last time. We will have a lot of possession, Karlsruhe defend extremely compact and tight. We want to try to find our goal-scoring opportunities. For us, it will be important that we prepare our moments with the ball cleanly and well, get into our target areas and be clinical in front of goal."

Fab four

Fabian Schleusener has scored four goals in his last four Bundesliga 2 matches against Hamburg.

Meffert's handball

A memorable relegation play-off in 2015 between these sides saw some late drama. Jonas Meffert of Karlsruhe committed a handball in stoppage time and the subsequent free-kick taken by Marcelo Diaz found the net - denying Karlsruhe promotion as Hamburg went on to win 2-1 in extra-time.

Karlsruhe end curse

Their 4-3 victory in January 2024 was Karlsruhe's first away win at Hamburg since 1992, ending a run of 13 previously unsuccessful attempts.

Good start

The reverse fixture was Hamburg's first match after Steffen Baumgart's dismissal and, with Merlin Polzin as coach, Hamburg won 3-1 at the Wildpark. An outstanding Jean-Luc Dompé scored two goals and provided one assist.
