Magdeburg the fair victors

El Hankouri's heel goal is enough for Magdeburg to secure an away win. For long stretches of the match, the visitors were the more mature side, so the win is certainly deserved. Regensburg had a great chance to equalise through a somewhat fortunate penalty. However, Viet squandered this opportunity. In the end, the 1-0 for FCM is probably the fair result.

Gnaka misses decisive opportunity

During a Magdeburg counter-attack, three away players run at one Regensburg defender. Gnaka is then played in and has a clear path, but fails to control the ball cleanly. Fizzling out the final chance of the game.

There are five minutes added on. The match has become extremely heated now, with Regensburg throwing everything forward with fury in their bellies. Is there still a chance for something to happen here?

A new striker

The luckless Kühlwetter is replaced by Hottmann. Can he shoot Regensburg back into the game?

One Against All

Magdeburg are looking to secure the three points, focusing on counter-attacks and sitting deeper. After winning the ball, striker Kaars charges forward with it, but has five Regensburg players in front of him. He manages to hold onto the ball until just outside the penalty area, where he is fairly dispossessed.

Jahn growing stronger

The match is now very balanced, after the first half clearly went to the visitors. Regensburg is significantly more active in this phase and is working towards an equaliser.

Kühlwetter!

The Regensburg striker is sent through and sees Reimann standing far off his line. However, Heber manages to push Kühlwetter wide, resulting in his attempt from a tight angle going well over the bar.

Lack of precision

FCM is doing well with one goal from three shots on target. However, Regensburg has not hit the target with any of their eight attempts, so they need to become more accurate.

Half-time at the Jahnstadion

Magdeburg have had everything under control for long stretches of the first half and deservedly lead through El Hankouri's flicked effort. It was only towards the end of the half that Regensburg became more active in attack and should have really rewarded themselves through Hein. It remains finely poised for the second 45.

He must score that!

A cross from the right side slips through to Hein in the Magdeburg penalty area. He has a clear shot from five metres out, lets a Magdeburg defender slide in vain, and then puts the ball centimetres wide of the left post! That should have been the equaliser!

Wurm stops Kaars

And just in the nick of time in front of the penalty area! Kaars would likely have been through on goal after a through ball. That was on the verge of being a professional foul!

It has been a fiercely contested affair thus far at the Jahnstadion.

Too imprecise

Magdeburg come dangerously forward again. This time Nollenberger crosses from the right side, but his cross fails to find the completely unmarked Burcu at the far post.

El Hankouri keeps shining

The goal scorer is really turning it on now. He's consistently showcasing tricks and beautiful dribbles following the opener. Brimming with confidence.

El Hankouri spins for early opener

El Hankouri initiates the attack himself and swiftly drives the ball forward through midfield. He then plays it out to Loric, who in turn serves him with a sharp cross in front of goal. Just outside the six-yard box, he then flicks the ball with his heel while turning, past the grasp of a helpless Gebhardt and into the net! Brilliant goal!

Christian Titz on Regensburg

"Regensburg is a team that tries to remain stable at the back and allow little, then look for their chances in counter-attacking situations. They have players with second-tier experience in their ranks. We will not underestimate the opponent"

Patz becomes head coach

Regensburg announced Andreas Patz's appointment as head coach until June 2025. Patz joined Regensburg as assistant coach in the summer of 2023. After parting ways with Joe Enochs, he took over the role of interim manager at the end of October following the league match against Nürnberg. Two wins and one loss later, Patz now has the top job.

What Andreas Patz says

"Magdeburg is a team with strong playing ability that identifies itself through ball possession and has the highest average in the league in that regard. They are the team with the most sprints and play the second-most passes. It's a real tough challenge that's coming our way."

Magdeburg's absentees

Magdeburg are missing Jean Hugonet (suspended due to yellow cards), Lubambo Musonda (adductor injury), Baris Atik (foot injury), Herbert Bockhorn (cruciate ligament rupture) and Emir Kuhinja (cruciate ligament rupture).

Regensburg's missing men

Regensburg will be without Dejan Galjen (suspended due to red card), Christian Schmidt (cruciate ligament injury), Max Meyer (broken ankle), Benedikt Saller (adductor problems), Florian Ballas (muscular issues) and Oscar Schönfelder (cruciate ligament injury).

Magdeburg winless in five

Recently, Magdeburg drew 0-0 at home against Ulm, and before that, they drew 2-2 away at Kaiserslautern. Prior to that, they suffered two defeats against Hannover and at HSV, as well as another draw against Fürth.

Setback for Regensburg

Regensburg lost 2-0 at Schalke on the last matchday, coming after after a 1-0 victory against Elversberg and another 1-0 win in the DFB Cup against Fürth.

There's a caveat...

On 23 September 2018, Titz suffered a 5-0 home defeat against Jahn Regensburg as manager of Hamburg.
camera-photo

Titz and Magdeburg the perfect combo

Under Christian Titz, Magdeburg have never lost against Regensburg: their record is three competitive matches, two wins, one draw.

Four encounters in the Bundesliga 2

In the second tier, the two clubs have previously met in 2018/19 (two Regensburg victories) and 2022/23 (one Magdeburg win, one draw).

The last encounter

Magdeburg won 2-1 away at Regensburg last season in the DFB Cup (Goals: Luca Schuler, Jean Hugonet - Dominik Kother).
