Côte d'Ivoire fought back valiantly in the second half, with substitute Diallo particularly catching the eye for his goal-line clearance and equaliser. The Norwegians lead again and it's that man Haaland with his fifth goal of the tournament! Bobb receives the ball to feet and spins his marker before threading a defence-splitting pass into the right inside channel for Berg to chase. The midfielder latches onto it, picks his head up and spots Haaland arriving at the far post, drilling the ball into the path of the former BVB striker, who extends his goalscoring run to one in each of his last 13 international appearances, becoming only the second player ever to do so.

Norway could not have come much closer to a second there! Ødegaard delivers a dangerous corner from the right, which is met by an unmarked Heggem inside the six-yard box. The defender's shot had Fofana beaten, but Diallo had not given up hope as he pulls off a remarkable goal-line clearance to preserve the one-goal deficit.

From another left-sided corner, Diomande sends another good cross into the Norwegian box. The Scandinavians win the initial header, but Diallo recovers the ball at the far post before swinging in yet another dangerous ball. Côte d'Ivoire had the momentum for large parts of the first half, with Yan Diomande proving particularly lively for the West Africans, but for all of the chances they've created, they have just lacked that killer edge in front of goal. The same can't be said of Diomande's Leipzig teammate Nusa, whose sumptuous late strike against the run of play stunned Côte d'Ivoire and is the difference between these sides at the end of the first 45.

Norway certainly appear lifted by their opener and almost found themselves two goals to the good. Sørloth rose to meet a cross from the right and brilliantly headed the ball into Haaland's path, but the striker's left-footed volley from six yards out is blocked behind by Sangaré, who makes a fantastic intervention.

Antonio Nusa take a bow! The Leipzig winger receives the ball out wide to the left from Ødegaard. From there, he takes a touch, beats Pépé, and sends a stunning effort curling towards the top right corner. Fofana stood no chance! Nevertheless, it's a goal that has come against the run of play, and marks the first time this tournament that Côte d'Ivoire have conceded first in a game.

That's the best chance of the match so far. Konan cuts in off the left flank for Côte d'Ivoire and bursts into the Norway box. Space opens up for a shot from a tight angle and the left-back opts to take it on himself, but his low, driven shot only lands in the side netting at the near post.

Inside the Norway box, Pépé tries to play a one-two with Kessie, but the return pass from Côte d'Ivoire's captain is overcooked and just rolls out of play for a Norwegian goal-kick before Pépé can retrieve it.

The right-back's cross finds Haaland's head around nine yards out, but the former Dortmund man's effort goalwards is too easy for the Côte d'Ivoire defence to deal with.

Diomande to continue shining for Leipzig?

It's no secret that the Ivorian winger's performances for both Leipzig last term and for his country at this World Cup have earned Diomande many admirers from some of the biggest clubs in the world. However, Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer was keen to cool any lingering transfer speculation surrounding the starlet, declaring on Tuesday: "Yan Diomande will play for RB Leipzig next season. And we're not backing down from that! We know what we have in him. Of course, if Yan keeps this up, the time will come when we'll help him take the next step – but not this year."

Milestones on both sides

For Côte d'Ivoire, Franck Kessie is set to make his 106th international cap, which will see him surpass Didier Drogba to outright claim fourth place in the country's all-time rankings in terms of appearances. Meanwhile for Norway, former Leipzig forward Alexander Sørloth (pictured) will be playing his 75th international match - the most of any player currently within Norway's World Cup squad.

After netting four goals in the group stage, which sees him rank joint-second in the race for the golden boot behind only Lionel Messi on six goals, former BVB striker Erling Haaland became just the sixth footballer – and the first in 53 years – to register a half-century of goals in fewer than 50 international caps, reaching the milestone after just 46 appearances. In so doing, Haaland joined the likes of Denmark’s Poul Nielsen (36 appearances), West Germany’s Gerd Müller (41), Hungary duo Ferenc Puskás (41) and Sándor Kocsis (42), and Brazil’s Pelé (49).

Dortmund star misses out

Ryerson will not feature for Norway against Côte I’voire after failing to recover from an injury he sustained in the group stage. The Borussia Dortmund man, who recorded a remarkable 15 assists in the Bundesliga last season, was taken off with a thigh problem in the 3-2 win over Senegal ‌last Tuesday.

The venue

Home of the famous Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stadium is the fourth biggest venue at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It will stage nine matches, more than any other stadium, including a semi-final. Opened in 2009, the retractable-roof venue is famous for its giant centre-hung video board and can accommodate around 70,000 spectators for World Cup matches.

Pulling the strings for Côte d'Ivoire

So far, Leipzig's star winger has set up his team-mates for ten shots at this World Cup, whilst no other player for Côte d'Ivoire has set up more than three. After playing a key part in the build-up for the opening goal in the 2-1 defeat to Germany, the skillful dribbler registered his first goal contribution against Curaçao in the West Africans' final group outing, grabbing the assist for the opening goal.

Leipzig stars in focus

Yan Diomande and Antonio Nusa are both expected to start for Côte d'Ivoire and Norway respectively, meaning two RB Leipzig team-mates will be going head-to-head in a bid to reach the last 16. Alongside them are three more familiar faces from the Bundesliga: Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Touré is available for selection for Côte d'Ivoire, just as Julian Ryerson of Borussia Dortmund and Sander Tangvik of Hamburg are for Norway.

This is the first ever meeting between Côte d’Ivoire and Norway, who have faced only two African teams (Morocco and Senegal) in their four appearances at the finals to date. The Elephants are also facing Scandinavian opposition for the first time at a World Cup.

Côte d'Ivoire opened their tournament with a dramatic late win over Ecuador (1-0) before conceding a winning goal in stoppage time against Germany (2-1). They did, though, advance as runners-up after beating Curaçao (2-0).

How they got here: Norway

Norway settled for second place behind France after rotating heavily against Michael Olise and Co., which resulted in a 4-1 defeat. They did, though, score seven goals across their opening two games, beating Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2) with former Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland scoring four goals.
