Harry Kane's 14th World Cup goal proved the winner as England beat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a thriller at the Estadio Azteca. Ex-Dortmund man Jude Bellingham put the Three Lions 2-0 up with a quickfire double before Mexico got a goal back. Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah was then sent off for a reckless challenge, but Kane's penalty made it 3-1 before the captain gave away a spot-kick for El Tri to convert and set up a grandstand finish. But England held on to set up a quarter-final tie with Norway.

Schalke have confirmed that defender Felipe Sánchez has joined Mexican top-flight side Santos Laguna on loan for the season, with a purchase clause built into the agreement after a certain number of appearances. The 22-year-old Argentinian, who has been at the Royal Blues since summer 2024, made 22 appearances in Bundesliga 2 last term.

Head-to-head record

England have won six of their nine encounters with Mexico - including each of their last four - but El Tri are unbeaten against the Three Lions (W2, D1) on home soil. The teams’ only previous World Cup meeting came in the 1966 group stage, when eventual winners England triumphed 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

How they got here: England

The Three Lions followed up an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia with a goalless draw against Ghana, but a 2-0 victory over Panama ensured they advanced to the knockout stage as Group L winners. They had to come from behind against DR Congo in the round of 32, with Harry Kane scoring twice to rescue Thomas Tuchel's side.

How they got here: Mexico

The co-hosts were one of only three teams to reach the knockout stages with a 100 percent group-stage record - and remain one of only two who are yet to concede a goal. Javier Aguirre’s side defeated South Africa (2-0), South Korea (1-0) and Czechia (3-0) in Group A to set up a round-of-32 clash with Ecuador, who were beaten 2-0 in Mexico City.
