Spain claim top spot as Uruguay crash out

Luis de la Fuente's Spain edged Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay in a narrow 1-0 victory courtesy of a late, first-half strike from Álex Baena. The South American side also finished the game with 10 men after Agustín Canobbio was dismissed for a high challenge on Pau Cubarsí. Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo had to extend his wait on the bench for a first World Cup appearance. The result sees Spain advance as group winners, whilst Uruguay suffer a second consecutive group-stage elimination.

What's at stake?

Spain and Uruguay respectively occupy first and second in Group H. A win in this one would guarantee Spain top spot, while a draw would also do the same, as long as Cabo Verde don't beat Saudi Arabia and overturn La Roja's goal difference. As for Uruguay, they must equal or better Cabo Verde's result to avoid elimination. However, a victory over Spain would secure their place in the round of 32.
