Australia clinch runners-up spot

St. Pauli pair Jackson Irvine (pictured, r.) and Connor Metcalfe both started for Australia in their crunch Group D tie against Paraguay in what was a head-to-head showdown for the runners-up spot. The game ended 0-0, leaving both teams on four points but sending the Socceroos into the round of 32 in second place given their superior goal difference. The South Americans will have to wait and see if they will join them in the knockouts.

What's at stake?

Paraguay will qualify as runners-up with a win. Anything else would see Australia go through in second, though the South Americans would still be in with a shot at advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Last time out: Paraguay

Despite a first-half red card for star Miguel Almirón, 10-man Paraguay stunned Türkiye 1-0 courtesy of Matías Galarza's lightning-fast opener, leaving the South Americans level on three points with the Socceroos ahead of their final group stage game.

Last time out: Australia

Australia suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the tournament co-hosts USA but - thanks to their curtain-raising victory over Türkiye and a superior goal difference to that of opponents Paraguay - the Socceroos and St. Pauli pair of Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe remain well-placed to qualify for the next round.
