Egypt survive late scare against Iran to progress

Egypt held Iran to a 1-1 draw to finish second in Group G behind Belgium and qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time in their country's history. Former Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush (pictured) was introduced as a half-time substitute. Iran thought they'd won it in the dying seconds via a 97th-minute Shoja Khalilzadeh strike but VAR intervened for an offside, meaning they must play the waiting game to see if they will qualify as one of the top-eight third-placed teams.

What's at stake?

Egypt's destiny is in their own hands. A win against Iran will guarantee they advance as Group G winners, meaning they will play a third-placed team in the knockout rounds. As for Iran, a win would also secure a place in the knockout rounds. However, if Belgium win in the other fixture and Iran don't pick up three points, it will leave them looking over their shoulders to see if they secure a knockout berth as one of eight best third-placed teams.
