Cape Verde make history

In Group H, Cape Verde claimed a third consecutive draw in their final outing as they played Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 standstill to finish as runners-up behind Spain. In so doing, the West African island country became the smallest nation by land area ever to reach the knockout stages of a World Cup, whilst Saudi Arabia finished bottom of the group on two points. Cape Verde will now face Argentina in the round of 32.

A win for Cabo Verde would send them through to the knockout rounds, and a draw could do the same if Uruguay lose to Spain. Additionally, if they match Uruguay's result, a draw would see Cabo Verde finish third and potentially qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, have to win, but they could still progress as runners-up if Spain beat Uruguay.

Kevin Pina netted the historic opener for the island nation, who then had to fight back from 2-1 down against the South Americans, with substitute Hélio Varela's strike on the hour mark keeping Group G wide open.
