Opening win for Bundesliga duo

RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande (r.) and Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Touré both started in Philadelphia as the Ivory Coast followed Germany's opening win in Group E with a last-minute victory over Ecuador. The South Americans, who included ex-Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié, hit the woodwork three times, while Eintracht Frankfurt-owned striker Elye Wahi did the same for the Ivorians as the game looked like ending goalless. That was until Amad Diallo (l.) - a second-half replacement for Touré - found the back of the net in the 90th minute, ending Ecuador's 19-game unbeaten run.

How they got here: Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast breezed through their qualifying group unbeaten (eight wins, two draws) without conceding a single goal. They were handy at the other end of the pitch too, netting 25 times.

Built on a steely defence, Ecuador lost just two of their 18 CONMEBOL qualifiers and conceded only five goals — the best defensive record of all South American sides — as Sebastián Beccacece’s charges finished runners-up to world champions Argentina.

Bundesliga participation

Electric wingers Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig) and Bazoumana Toure (Hoffenheim) have made Emerse Faé's Ivory Coast squad as the Elephants partake in their first World Cup since Brazil 2014. For Ecuador, Stuttgart's Jeremy Arévalo is the only Bundesliga participant from 2025/26, although Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapié, who spent the season on loan at Arsenal, is expected to play a big role.
