Werder Bremen denied by Hertha Berlin wall in stalemate

Werder Bremen impacted with a rock solid Hertha Berlin wall at the Weser Stadium on Saturday evening, with a goalless draw doing little to boost their survival hopes.

Bremen 0-0 Hertha

The Weser Stadium erupted after ten minutes when Maximilian Eggestein threaded his shot inside the near post from Jerome Gondorf's pass, but the celebrations did not last long before Video Assist intervened and an earlier foul by Thomas Delaney on Fabian Lustenberger meant the goal was ruled out. Lustenberger soldiered on for a further ten minutes before leaving the field due to concussion. Bremen would have been good value for a lead in the first half, but as Max Kruse's shot deflected over just before half-time, it was evident luck was not on their side.

Bremen continued to try to find a way through the Hertha defence in the second half, and when Gondorf found room on the right and pulled the ball back for captain Zlatko Junuzovic, the home fans held their breath in expectation. However, the Austrian set-piece specialist struck his shot too tamely at Thomas Kraft. Vedad Ibisevic then scooped Hertha's only chance of the game over from point-blank range before Kraft's save from Theodor Gebre Selassie fell to Gondorf, whose curling effort hit the far post and went wide. Ishak Belfodil also went close on two occasions before Jordan Torunarigha made a goalline clearance from Eggestein with the last touch of the game, proving it was just not to be Bremen's night.
