Schalke have completed a major transfer coup by securing the services of Hoffenheim striker Mark Uth on a free this summer.

Uth, the joint top-scoring German striker in the Bundesliga this season with nine goals, has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at the Veltins Arena, starting from 1 July 2018.

The news comes as a blow to Hoffenheim and young coach Julian Nagelsmann, who have already bid farewell to Sandro Wagner this winter, the striker joining Bayern Munich.

"I'm certain that moving to Schalke is the correct next step in my career," said Uth upon the announcement of the move to Gelsenkirchen. "I'm looking forward to the new challenge from the summer, but until then it goes without saying that I'll be giving it everything I've got to help Hoffenheim achieve their aims this season."

"Mark Uth is currently the best German goalscorer in the Bundesliga and will really improve our attacking options from the summer," said the Royal Blues' sporting director Christian Heidel. "We're really pleased to be able to bring him to Schalke."
