The third strike

Reis receives the ball from a throw-in, goes past two opponents and shoots. His shot is deflected and loops into the roof of the net. That is surely the final nail in the coffin.

Füllkrug and Reis start

Daniel Thioune had left it open, but it's now confirmed that returnee Niclas Füllkrug (pictured) starts for Bremen. In addition, Ludovit Reis, who was signed from Club Brugge, also makes his full debut.

Werder Bremen's cup history

Between 2017/18 and 2020/21, Bremen reached at least the quarter-final of the cup every season. Since then, they've only gone as far as the quarters once, when they lost to Arminia Bielefeld in 2024/25. They then lost to Bielefeld again the following season, but this time in the first round.

Debut for Füllkrug?

Bremen coach Daniel Thioune has left the chance of the returning striker being involved still open. He says he has "not yet made a final decision on which striker or strikers will be on the pitch, simply because far too much is happening day by day."

DFB Cup spot sealed with penalty drama

In the final of the Lower Saxony regional cup, Lüneburg found themselves 0-3 down against Bersenbrück at half-time. After the break, they showed tremendous character, first levelling at 3-3 before winning the penalty shootout. The hero of the day was goalkeeper Arne Exner, who saved three penalties.

Daniel Thioune on facing Lüneburger Hansa

"As long as we leave the pitch as winners, we will get a small sense of achievement. We went about our preparations very carefully, by finding out everything there is to know about Lüneburg. We watched two of their matches in full and analysed the details. We don't want any surprises and want to rule out the possibility that this match of the season for Lüneburg could also become the worst match of the season for us. That must not happen."

Tarek Gibbah on facing Werder Bremen

"From every position, the centre must be closed down. It cannot happen that a quality central midfielder of theirs is allowed to turn in front of our defence - then we will be almost done for. This match has been looming over everything for weeks. I have no desire for us to be blown out of the stadium!"
