DFB Cup

Round 1

FCS Saarbrücken 1. FC Saarbrücken - BSC Hertha Hertha Berlin

Ludwigsparkstadion(15,500 Spectators)
Benjamin Brand

Full-time: Saarbrücken 1-1 Hertha Berlin (aet, Hertha win 4-2 on pens.)

Hertha win the shootout against Saarbrücken and progress to the next round of the DFB Cup. For large stretches of the match, the away side were dominant, taking a deserved second-half lead through Seguin, before Saarbrücken managed a late and somewhat fortunate sucker punch through Fahrner to level the score shortly before the final whistle of normal time. Extra-time followed, but the search for a winner continued into the shootout, where the Old Lady kept their nerve and converted all of their penalties to advance.

We're going to penalties!

After 120 minutes of play, the score remains 1-1, so the decision will now be made via a penalty shootout. Both teams struggled in extra time, however Hertha had two good chances through Klemens and Schuler. Ultimately, the Old Lady couldn't find the back of the net and so it will now come down to nerves of steel.

113'

Chance for Schuler

The striker gets a shot off from six yards out and is denied by a strong save from Broll, who uses his face to make the block. Unbelievable!

Extra time

Extra time awaits!

After 90 minutes played, the score is 1-1, so we're now heading into extra time. Seguin's stunning goal in the 69th minute was not enough for Hertha, as Fahrner struck a late equaliser for Saarbrücken just before the end. There will now be an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
End of second half

Saarbrücken draw level!

Fahrner takes aim centrally from 25 yards and lets fly. Gersbeck's view is slightly obscured when the shot is taken and sees it late. The effort, which is fairly central, slips past the goalkeeper and sends the home fans into raptures! This one may well go the distance now...

Kick-off!

Half-time: Saarbrücken 0-0 Hertha Berlin

After 45 minutes played, the contest between Saarbrücken and Hertha remains goalless. The Old Lady were largely dominant throughout, but were unlucky in the 16th minute when Zeefuik's shot ricocheted off the crossbar. The third-division side had a good chance just before half-time through Nankishi, who was however denied by Gersbeck. There is still absolutely everything to play for both teams in the second half.
Half-time
42'

Nankishi with the shot

The Saarbrücken player leaves Zeefuik well behind on the right flank and then drives into the penalty area. From a tight angle he attempts a shot from ten metres, Gersbeck is at the near post and parries it safely forward.
41'

Overcooked

Seguin plays a through ball forward into the penalty area for Brekalo to chase, but the pass is just a touch too long and only finds the Saarbrücken defence.
39'

Too inaccurate

Thorsteinsson looks to switch the play, but his pass from the right finds no recipient and goes out of play on the left flank. The hosts restart with a throw-in.
36'

Nankishi down the flank

The winger initially does well to get past Zeefuik on the right and drives into the box, but the Hertha man follows up and fairly dispossesses the Saarbrücken player with a robust, physical challenge.
34'

Handball

Brekalo has the ball in a dangerous position on the left side of the penalty area, but the referee spots an infringement in the form of handball and awards a free-kick to the hosts.

Battling hard

Neither team is giving the other a moment on the ball here.
26'

Overzealous

Grönning has the ball on the right side, but commits a foul high up the pitch in a duel with Kühlwetter. Play continues with a free-kick for Saarbrücken.
20'

No takers in the middle

Thorsteinsson crosses from the right into the centre, but Saarbrücken are alert in the middle and clear the danger.
19'

Eitschberger down

The Hertha player is lying on the turf in midfield, clutching his throat. He had previously collided with Staff.
16'

Off the bar!

Almost the opener for the Berliners! Zeefuik cuts in from the left inside and lets fly with his right foot from the edge of the box, hammering the ball off the woodwork. The situation remains dangerous afterwards, as Thorsteinsson then hits the rebound towards the bottom left corner. Broll has to dive at full stretch to tip the shot brilliantly around the post, conceding a corner which brings no danger for Hertha.
13'

Hertha on the front foot

The Old Lady is dominating play early on here and is repeatedly looking to make inroads into the opposition's half. However, Saarbrücken have so far held their own, cleverly closing down spaces and occasionally threatening on the counter.
10'

Shot blocked

Pick drives at pace into the box from the right but Zeefuik tracks back well and ultimately dispossesses the attacker fairly.
5'

Early chance

Zeefuik cuts in from the left elects to shoot from just inside the penalty area. His effort is aimed towards the top left corner, but Broll makes a good save and pushes it out for a corner. The resulting set piece from the left side comes to nothing for the Old Lady.
1'

We're underway!

The referee blows the whistle and the ball gets rolling here in Saarbrücken. Hertha are looking to attack from the outset.
Kick-off!

More on that Hertha side

Stefan Leitl is forced to make a change on the right flank after Marten Winkler completed a move to Anderlecht earlier in the week. He is replaced Jón Dagur Þorsteinsson (pictured).

Dream start for Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken turned their first home match of the season around from going 0-2 down to claiming a 5-2 win against Rot-Weiss Essen, and followed that with a last-minute win in Regensburg with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Balanced head-to-head record

The overall record between both teams is relatively balanced. Hertha have won six matches, Saarbrücken seven, with five draws between the pair. Hertha would have to claim their first win at the Ludwigsparkstadion after three previous draws and six defeats to stay in the cup.

Stefan Leitl on facing Saarbrücken

"We are looking forward to the competition and have a tough task ahead of us in a packed stadium against a team that has started superbly. This is a 50-50 match. The side that makes fewer mistakes will advance to the next round. Saarbrücken have an exciting squad with many talented young players and Bundesliga 2 experience. We will approach it like a league match. We are aware of a few weaknesses in Saarbrücken, and I expect us to be able to exploit them!"

Argirios Giannikis on facing Hertha

"We have a wonderful story with the cup in Saarbrücken. We are ambitious because of our past. Hertha won both of their opening matches – so did we. They won their first home match by three goals – so did we."
