Quansah's delight

"We're delighted to have reached the last 16 – and it didn't involve any more work than expected," explained Bayer defender Jarell Quansah. "We knew Olympiacos were very strong and that we would have to compete for everything again. That's how it turned out. Now we face one of the two best teams in Europe: Bayern or Arsenal."
camera-photo

Blaswich ready for Bayern or Arsenal

"We achieved our goal and that's what counts," said Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich after the game. "We invested a lot in both games and worked hard. Maybe not everything looked great today, but we're through. Now we have an absolutely top team waiting for us in Bayern or Arsenal."

Full-time: Leverkusen 0-0 Olympiacos (2-0 on agg)

Leverkusen succeed in protecting their 2-0 first-leg advantage to qualify for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with an assured defensive performance at the BayArena. For all of their possession, the visitors never really looked like scoring, whilst Grimaldo went closest in the second half for Die Werkself, with the only thing denying him from scoring a third in the tie for Leverkusen being the crossbar. Kasper Hjulmand's side had a game plan, and they executed it perfectly.

Schick almost puts it to bed!

A Leverkusen counter is spearheaded by Arthur. He plays it to García, who slips Schick in behind, but the Czech's chipped finish ends up in the near post side netting.
90'
+ 1

Blocked behind

Luiz finds space for a shot on the edge of Leverkusen's penalty area, but again, it's blocked by Tapsoba. Rodinei's subsequent corner delivery is a good one, but Leverkusen manage to clear on their second time of asking.

Stoppage time

Four additional minutes have been indicated.
90'

Final roll of the dice

Olympiacos make their final changes ahead of stoppage time here. Can the substitutes help pull off a miracle for the visitors?
90'

Substitution

89'

Flashed wide

Scipioni hits a strike from distance. He catches it well and the ball is swerving in mid-air, but it swerves wide right of the mark.
86'

Shepherded behind

Luiz tries to get the better of Tapsoba down the right flank, but the Leverkusen defender shows great strength and positioning to force the Olympiacos man off the ball, which he then shields behind for a goal-kick.
82'

Retsos to the rescue

Leverkusen have a three-on-three situation. Arthur drives up the right flank before aiming a cross towards the far post where Schick is arriving. It doesn't reach him, however, as the recovering Retsos makes a crucial intervention to prevent the Czech forward from having a one-on-one with his goalkeeper.
81'

Safe hands

A chance opens up for Olympiacos on the counter. Martins tries to bend a cross in from the left flank, but it lands straight in Blaswich's gloves.
78'

Too imprecise

Luiz gets away from Tapsoba, before looking for the run of El Kaabi in the middle. However, his cross is too inaccurate and flies behind for a goal-kick.
camera-photo

Vázquez withdrawn

After stretching to make a tackle, the veteran Spaniard immediately signalled to the bench before walking gingerly off the pitch. He has been quickly replaced by Arthur.
77'

Substitution

75'

Roof of the net

García delivers a corner from the left towards the far post, where Andrich is to connect with a header. He wins the aerial duel, but his effort lands on top of the net.
74'

Double change

Hjulmand makes further alterations, introducing Fernández and the youngster Culbreath for Palacios and Hofmann.
72'

Flashed wide

Luiz picks the ball up in a central position and has but one thing on his mind: to shoot. His effort is a powerful one, but flies wide of the left post.
camera-photo

Denied by the crossbar

Grimaldo was a matter of inches away from giving Leverkusen a three-goal aggregate lead in the tie in the second half here.
68'

Tapsoba comes across

A deep cross from Rodinei towards the far post finds Martins, who seems to have swapped flanks. The Portuguese heads back across goal, but Tapsoba rushes across in the nick of time before his header can find Luiz inside the box.
66'

Double change

The first change for the visitors comes in the form of a double substitution. It's a like-for-like swap in attack, with Luiz and El Kaabi coming in for Chiquinho and Taremi.
66'

Substitution

63'

Martins!

Blaswich's pass out from the back is intercepted by Chiquinho, who moves the ball on to Martins. The winger gets a shot away, but it's blocked behind for a corner by Tapsoba. Olympiacos don't manage to make anything of the set-piece, though.
62'

Woodwork!

An excellent team move from Leverkusen culminates in Grimaldo playing a one-two with Poku. The Spaniard gets it back before blasting a powerful, high effort towards the near post. The keeper is beaten, but the ball rattles off the crossbar.
58'

Outswinger

An Olympiacos corner comes in from the left, but Tapsoba is first to the ball to head it clear.
camera-photo

First change

Kasper Hjulmand is the first of the coaches to go to the bench, withdrawing Maza for Poku.
55'

Excellent control

Under pressure from two players, Maza expertly brings down a high ball before beating his markers and laying the ball back for García, who subsequently loses possession.
52'

Dangerous ball

Again, it's Martins causing problems for Leverkusen's defence. The Portuguese plays a low cross towards the far post, looking for Chiquinho. His teammate wasn't quite on the same wavelength, though, and doesn't manage to get on the end of it.
50'

Well struck

From out of nothing, Martins hits a half-volley from a tight angle on the right side under pressure from Tapsoba. He connects superbly with the ball, drilling it towards the far corner, but Blaswich dives across to parry.
46'

Back underway!

The ball is rolling again for the final 45 minutes of this play-off tie. It's Leverkusen who kick off. Neither coach has elected to make any changes at the interval.

Half-time: Leverkusen 0-0 Olympiacos

A first half of few chances, which has so far suited Leverkusen perfectly, draws to a close. Die Werkself have had the better of the attack, with Schick coming the closest to breaking the deadlock after lobbing Tzolakis, but otherwise, clear-cut opportunities have been hard to come by. As things stand, Kasper Hjulmand's men are 45 minutes or so from the last 16.
Half-time
42'

One-way traffic

For the past few minutes, it's been all Olympiacos here. Leverkusen seem content to sit back and defend for now. It's a strategy that has worked for the hosts so far. For all their possession, the visitors are yet to have a shot on target.
38'

Dangerous ball in

Rodinei takes a free-kick from in off the right flank. He picks out a teammate at the far post, who tries to steer the ball back across goal to Pirola, but Grimaldo wins out in the aerial duel and Leverkusen clear.
36'

Cheeky

High up on the right flank, Martins cuts back, sending Maza flying past him in an attempt to make a block. The Portuguese then aims for the near post, firing goalwards with the outside of his boot, but Blaswich is there to make a comfortable save.
camera-photo

Typical of García

As has happened for the majority of the season, most of Leverkusen's play is going through García in the midfield, who is dictating the start of every attack for Die Werkself.
32'

Punched clear

After Andrich is penalised for a foul on Taremi, Mouzakitis delivers the resultant free-kick from the right half-space. His delivery leaves something to be desired, however, as he puts it too close to Blaswich, who comes off his line fist to it away.
28'

Unable to profit

Leverkusen take a risk and try to play out from the back under pressure. García's pass is too short and pounced upon by an opposition player, who shifts it on for Martins. The winger would have had a real opportunity, but his touch let him down and Leverkusen are let off for what could've been a costly error.
26'

No way through

Andrich tries to pick out Hofmann on the edge of the visitors' box with a pass between the lines, but it's read and intercepted by Olympiacos.
camera-photo

Midfield contest

Much of the play inside the opening 20 minutes has taken place in the midfield, with neither side able to dominate possession as of yet.
17'

Whipped in

García delivers a free-kick from around 45 yards from goal near the right touchline. It's aimed towards Schick at the far post, but the Spaniard overhits his delivery.
15'

Composed

Martins looks to cross towards Chiquinho from the right, but Vázquez is there to coolly control the ball down for Blaswich with his chest whilst under pressure.
10'

In the nick of time

García threads Schick in behind Olympiacos' defence. The Czech striker looks to pick out Grimaldo with a delicate cut back, but an opposition defender recovers excellently to clear it behind for a corner. Leverkusen don't manage to make anything of the set-piece.
8'

Unique routine

With their first corner of the game, Chiquinho is picked out on the edge of the box. Unmarked, he bends an effort goalwards, but it's always rising over the bar.
6'

Golden chance for the lead!

Schick makes a great run in behind the visitors' defence and is found with a long ball over the top. Tzolakis rushes off his line, but Schick gets there first to lob the onrushing keeper. However, he gets the finish just wrong and the ball goes agonisingly wide of the mark.
5'

First corner

Leverkusen take it short. It's worked to Grimaldo, who whips a teasing cross in from the right. Schick gets his head to it, but can only guide the ball wide of the left post.
4'

Sneaking in

Grimaldo finds Vázquez high up on the right flank with a fantastic switch of play. The Spaniard tees up Hofmann on the edge of the box, but his powerful effort is beaten behind for a corner by Tzolakis.
3'

Offside

The visitors look to cross again, this time from deep on the right flank. Gelson Martins is picked out at the far post, but is deemed to be in an offside position.
2'

Intricate

Olympiacos have started brightly. A good team move releases Chiquinho down the left flank, but his attempted cross is blocked by Quansah.
1'

And we're off!

It's the visitors from Greece who get the ball rolling for this second leg play-off at the BayArena.

More on that Olympiacos team

Olympiacos make two changes from the starting XI they fielded for first leg. José Luis Mendilibar replaces winger Daniel Podence and Ayoub El Kaabi with Chiquinho (pictured, r.) and Dani García.
camera-photo

Caution required ahead

Midfielder Aleix García (pictured), who is among the starters, and forward Christian Kofane, who takes his place on the bench today, are each a yellow card away from incurring a one-game suspension.
camera-photo

More on that Leverkusen side

Kasper Hjulmand makes four changes to the line-up he fielded for Leverkusen's 1-0 league defeat away to Union Berlin on Saturday. Jarell Quansah, Exequiel Palacios, Jonas Hofmann (pictured) and Patrik Schick all get the nod, replacing Loïc Badé (thigh) and Malik Tillman (ankle), who are injured, and Arthur and Ezequiel Fernández, who drop to the bench. Compared to the first leg, Hofmann for Ernest Poku on the right wing is the only change.

Mr. Dependable

Alejandro Grimaldo has featured in every UEFA Champions League game so far this term, providing four goals and two assists, including a trademark free-kick strike in a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen.
camera-photo

Leverkusen's midfield metronome

Only Paris Saint-Germain's Vitinha has completed more passes than Leverkusen's Aleix García (658) in this season's competition. The Spaniard has a 91.7 percent accuracy and has scored two goals, both against PSG.
camera-photo

José Luis Mendilibar on facing Leverkusen

"We need to have the courage to play our own game, to be aggressive and to win the ball at the right time to have more possession of the ball compared to the two previous games. We need to have better possession of the ball to play a better game."
camera-photo

Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich on Olympiacos' set-piece prowess

"Set-pieces are dangerous when the incoming balls are good and there are big players who are good in the air. That could be the case with Olympiacos. But we're prepared for that, we also have players of that calibre."
camera-photo

Kasper Hjulmand on facing Olympiacos

"It's a good position to be in and a good result, but also a dangerous one - if you take it too lightly. We're taking the game very seriously; it's not over yet. We'll need to be at our best against a great opponent. But even the win in the first leg doesn't change the fact we're approaching the game as we normally do: We want to be proactive and win."
camera-photo

Looking ahead

Should Leverkusen successfully navigate the second leg, a draw on Friday would determine whether they play Bayern Munich (who knocked them out of the Champions League last season) or Arsenal in the last 16.
camera-photo

Decent omens

There have been 191 instances of a team winning a UEFA Champions League or European Cup away first leg by two goals or more (as Leverkusen did in Greece last week), and only twice has that team been knocked out in the return leg at home...

Early Olympiacos team news

Striker Angelakis and defender Bakoulas remain unavailable due to ligament injuries, while Yazıcı, who scored at the weekend, is not in the Champions League squad along with defender Rúben Vezo. Winger Gelson Martins, who was rested against Panetolikos last time out, is expected to come back into the side.

Early Leverkusen team news

Ben Seghir (ankle), Flekken (knee) and Tella (foot) were all absent last time out against Union Berlin, with Badé (muscular) and Tillman (ankle) joining the injury list - although the latter has hopes of recovering in time for the clash. The likes of Quansah, Schick and Poku are likely to return to the starting XI after being rested at the weekend.

Getting the job done

Leverkusen have won six of their last eight two-legged knockout ties in European competition. They have also been beaten just twice in 18 games at the BayArena in continental tournaments, putting them in a strong position to progress to the last 16 here.

Andrich: "You have to be patient"

Leverkusen captain Andrich, meanwhile, said: "The game played a bit like games can in a heated stadium. You have to be patient, you have to defend well. We did that very well for long stretches. And that's the first step."
camera-photo

Hjulmand happy but wary

After the full-time whistle at Olympiacos, Hjulmand said: "We had great chances in the first half; I had a sense of déjà vu from last time [when we lost 2-0]. After the first goal, we were in control and played quite well. But that was only half-time in the tie, and it's not over yet; we still have to play a good game."

Leverkusen on top

The Werkself welcome Olympiacos to their home ground in control of the tie at the halfway point. Patrik Schick was the hero in Greece in the first leg, scoring twice as Kasper Hjulmand's side secured a 2-0 victory.
