Why Bayer Leverkusen's Montrell Culbreath deserves his new deal

Bayer Leverkusen have tied Montrell Culbreath down to a new long-term contract until 30 June 2031. We explain why the German-American teenager has earned it...

Culbreath's long-term extension is a reflection of his rapid development and the Leverkusen hierarchy's growing trust in his potential to become a key figure for the Rhineland club.

The 18-year-old forward made a real breakthrough in the latter stages of the 2025/26 season, progressing from a promising academy prospect to a genuine first-team option in the Leverkusen attack.

His performances across 16 appearances in the Bundesliga (12), UEFA Champions League (3) and DFB Cup (1) were marked by composure beyond his years, intelligent decision-making in tight spaces, and a willingness to take responsibility in high-pressure moments. The Landstuhl-born talent even scored a Bundesliga debut goal against RB Leipzig.

What stood out most about Culbreath was his ability to adapt quickly to the demands of senior football. Whether used from the start or introduced off the bench, he consistently brought energy and purpose to Leverkusen's play.

He showed a growing understanding of tempo, knowing when to accelerate attacks and when to retain possession, which helped the team maintain structure in key phases of matches. That maturity, especially in decisive late-season fixtures, gave the coaching and backroom staff confidence that he could be relied on in more demanding fixtures.

"The further extension of the contract term is a clear sign of our satisfaction with Montrell," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes. "We are very pleased that he has made the jump into professional football and seized his opportunity with determination"

For new head coach Carles Martínez, Culbreath offers a versatile and tactically intelligent option who can fit into multiple roles within Leverkusen's system - typically on the right wing or in a central attacking role. His technical ability allows him to operate between the lines, while his explosive pace makes him a constant threat in one-against-one situations.

Martínez, known for valuing fluid positional play and quick transitions, will likely see the Germany U19 international – who also represented the USA at U16s level – as a player who can connect midfield and attack, and press the opposition effectively without the ball.

As well as Culbreath's qualities as a footballer, the extension highlights Leverkusen's long-term strategic vision. Securing a young player who has already shown he can deliver for the pros helps ensure continuity as the squad continues to evolve after the unprecedented success under Xabi Alonso in 2023/24 – when the club secured an unbeaten domestic double – and the managerial transition from Kasper Hjulmand to Martínez.

For his part, the youngster is giving no indication that he will be resting on his laurels either, explaining: “I always believed in my abilities, but the fact that it all happened so quickly is wonderful. I’m not going to sit back now - I’m going to keep giving it everything I’ve got.”

If Culbreath continues on his current trajectory, he has the profile to develop into a key contributor rather than simply a rotational option, making his new deal as much about future value as immediate impact.
