Yan Diomande: Who is the Real Madrid speedster who took the Bundesliga by storm?

Real Madrid have acquired the services of 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande following his stunning debut campaign at RB Leipzig. Let’s take a deeper look at his journey so far...

Data correct as of 6 July 2026

Yan Diomande

Age: 19 (born 14 November 2006)
Club: Real Madrid
Position: Winger
Country: Côte d'Ivoire (14 caps, three goals)

Key stats

Born in Abidjan in 2006, Diomande moved to the USA at a young age and joined the DME Academy in Florida, with his performances for associate team AS Frenzi leading to an undefeated season and the local league title in 2023.

A trial with Scottish side Rangers followed in October that year, but he ultimately returned to DME until November 2024, before signing his first professional contract with Spanish La Liga side Leganés.

Despite getting off to a slow start, Diomande soon managed to stand out in Spain. He scored one and assisted another in a final-day victory over Real Valladolid as the Spanish outfit were relegated. That was one of two goals he netted in 10 outings throughout the campaign.

After making the switch to the Red Bull Arena, Diomande was handed his first Bundesliga start against Bayern Munich in the 2025/26 season opener. While a 6-0 defeat was not the debut he would have wished for, things have only improved since then. On Matchday 8, he scored his first of 12 Bundesliga goals for the club against Augsburg, marking the start of a memorable debut campaign.

Internationally, Diomande represents the country of his birth. Having made one U17 and U23 appearance apiece, he was called up to the senior side for the first time in October 2025. The youngster hit the ground running, too, netting three goals for Côte d'Ivoire before earning his first FIFA World Cup assist against Curaçao this summer.

Following the World Cup, Diomande left Leipzig for Spanish giants Real Madrid on a long-term deal, bringing his extraordinary spell in Germany to an end.

Plays a bit like: Nico Williams

Diomande is naturally right-footed, but is able to play off either foot and on either wing. With pace to burn, combined with outrageous levels of skill and agility, there are clear similarities to Spain international Williams.

Moreover, his decision making - and consistency - is extraordinary for someone so young, as shown by his ability to produce an end product in the form of goals and assists.

Did you know?

Diomande was the first Ivorian to feature for Leipzig. In fact, he is just the sixth African to step out for the side, following the likes of Naby Keïta and Ademola Lookman.

What they're saying

"He's a left winger with outstanding speed, can dribble, is very athletic and can finish. He also never gives up the ball and works for the team." - Leipzig managing director Marcel Schäfer

"His dedication to improving his game day in and day out is truly inspiring. He is not just a gifted athlete but also a team player who understands the importance of collaboration and unity on and off the field. We are incredibly proud of his achievements, and we believe this is just the beginning of an extraordinary career." - Thales Peterson, former Director of Soccer at DME Academy

"He often gets past his opponents without any tricks, simply because he's so dynamic. But what's even more important to me is that he works for the team and is very good at counter-pressing. It's a matter of attitude, and he demonstrates that." – former Leipzig head coach Ole Werner
