Key stats

Born under 50km from Mönchengladbach in 2008, Mohya had already made history by becoming Gladbach’s youngest-ever player when he featured against Karlsruhe in the DFB Cup and their youngest in the Bundesliga to boot following his cameo against Wolfsburg on Matchday 14 of this term.

His goal against Bayern - which made him the third-youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history - only confirmed his status as one Gladbach’s and Germany’s brightest young talents. He joined the club at the age of just eight, and made his bow for the club’s U17s in 2023/24. The following term, he featured 17 times, scoring six goals as Gladbach were crowned German champions at that age group.

That same term, he also featured regularly for the U19s, before training regularly with the first team this campaign. Over two months before his 17th birthday, he was included in the squad for Gladbach’s trip to Union, made his Bundesliga debut in December against Wolfsburg and went on to make his first start against the Irons on Matchday 24.

At international level, Mohya represents Germany and picked up his first cap for the U16s in September 2023, scoring in a 5-0 win under Austria. He has since progressed to the U18s, impressing along the way – an U21 call-up may therefore be not too far away.

Plays a bit like: Florian Wirtz

Just above Mohya in the all-time youngest Bundesliga scorers is Wirtz, who also netted his maiden top-tier strike against Bayern, and the two share plenty of similarities in the way they play on the field.

Both relatively small playmakers, Mohya likes to receive the ball in tight spaces and combine quickly with his teammates, much like Germany international Wirtz. The current Liverpool man was more prolific at youth level, but Mohya’s early showings in the Bundesliga have suggested the youngster is not out of place amongst the elite.

Did you know?

Mohya’s brother Rayan, one year his senior, is also a footballer and is currently playing for Fortuna Sittard's youth teams in the Netherlands. Both are also eligible to represent Morocco at international level through their parents.

What they’re saying

"It was a very special moment to celebrate my Bundesliga debut here at BORUSSIA-PARK. My family was in the stadium and so there live. A better result would certainly have made it even better than it already was. But it was still a very special day for me." – Mohya after his Bundesliga debut

"I’m very happy with Wael. He's fought very hard for the minutes he got over the past few months. He had to wait long enough. I'm pleased that we can develop such young players in our academy." – Gladbach head coach Eugen Polanski after Mohya’s first league game

“If Wael stays fit, he could definitely break the record. He’s got enormous quality and a great attitude.” – Foals teammate Rocco Reitz
