Heading into the Friday night fixture which kicked off Matchday 21, Dortmund were in the relegation play-off spot and three points behind Mainz - in 13th place - after a disastrous Hinrunde which saw Klopp's side pick up just four wins from the first 19 games of the season. The BVB home support was looking to inspire their side to find form in the second month of the new year.
Dortmund had four of their title-winning back-five in action, with Roman Weidenfeller captaining the side behind Lukasz Piszczek, Neven Subotic and Marcel Schmelzer while Sokratis occupied the second centre-back spot. Nuri Sahin and Ilkay Gündogan partnered one another in midfield and ahead of them was a highly-talented front-four: Kevin Kampl, Shinji Kagawa and Marco Reus supporting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in attack.
Mainz had 20-year-old Stefanos Kapino in goal, making his first start in the Bundesliga and only second appearance for the club in place of the suspended Loris Karius. Elsewhere, head coach Kasper Hjulmand set-up with strength across midfield with Johannes Geis playing the holding role behind Yunus Malli, Elkin Soto, Julian Baumgartlinger and Jonas Hofmann. All the B's were in defence with Daniel Brosinski, captain Niko Bungert, Stefan Bell and Pierre Bengtsson from right to left. Shinji Okazaki led the attack.
