Stuttgart and RB Leipzig entered the match both sitting on 47 points in the battle for Champions League qualification. The hosts were looking to bounce back from their midweek 2-1 defeat to Porto in the Europa League, while Leipzig arrived with momentum after back-to-back comebacks in the Bundesliga.

Evenly balanced first half

The opening period saw Stuttgart controlling possession but struggling to create clear chances. Leipzig looked dangerous on the counter-attack, particularly through the pace of Diomande on the right flank.

The visitors fashioned the best opportunity of the half when David Raum played an inch-perfect through ball to Christoph Baumgartner, who found himself one-on-one with Alexander Nübel but ballooned his effort over the bar from close range. Stuttgart responded with headers from Ermedin Demirović and Undav that narrowly missed the target.

The decisive moment came 11 minutes into the second half. Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt played a misplaced pass directly to Chris Führich, who quickly found Undav in space. The in-form striker made no mistake, coolly slotting past Vandevoordt to score his fifth goal in five consecutive Bundesliga matches.

Leipzig nearly equalised soon after when Nicolas Seiwald's header from a corner was brilliantly tipped by Nübel onto the post.

Stuttgart hold firm despite late pressure

The visitors came agonisingly close to an equaliser in stoppage time when captain Willi Orbán's header from Raum's cross struck the right post with Nübel beaten. Stuttgart's victory moves them level on points with third-placed Hoffenheim, while Leipzig remain fifth, three points clear of sixth-placed Leverkusen.

Player of the Match: Deniz Undav

Undav was the difference-maker once again for Stuttgart, continuing his remarkable scoring run with his 16th Bundesliga goal of the season. Beyond his clinical finish for the winner, the 29-year-old forward led Stuttgart's attacking efforts with six shots throughout the match – more than any other player on the pitch. His hold-up play was exceptional as he won 14 challenges despite being placed under pressure 22 times by the Leipzig defenders.

Undav's ability to convert from a chance with an xG value of just 0.1898 demonstrated his clinical finishing ability and further cemented his status as one of the Bundesliga's most lethal strikers.
