The best long-range goals in Bundesliga history
Since its inauguration in 1963, the Bundesliga has produced many spectacular goals, but some of the best have come from outside of the box. Here are the best long-range goals from Germany’s top flight.
First of all, there’s no beating the longest of them all when Moritz Stoppelkamp scored from almost his own penalty area to send promoted Paderborn to the top of the Bundesliga table with victory against Hannover. Measured at 82 metres, nobody has ever netted from further out in the Bundesliga – and Paderborn even have Moritz-Stoppelkamp-Allee outside their stadium to remember the moment. It is, of course, 82 metres long.
There have been many more brilliant goals from closer but still falling into the long-range category. In 2006/07, Diego decided to finish a counter-attack from his own half, firing over all defenders standing in his way. And in 1992/93, Lothar Matthäus buried a volley from a corner standing at the edge of the box. You can watch those and many more of the best long-range goals in the Bundesliga in the video above.
You often get brilliant goals from outside the box from free-kicks. Think back to Marcel Risse’s remarkable effort from wide out on the left to snatch derby victory for Cologne away at Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2016/17. Or how about just pinging one in from kick-off? That’s what Alex Alves did for Hertha Berlin in 2000/01 straight after conceding.
