Cabo Verde earn shock draw with Spain on World Cup debut
Spain were held to a goalless draw by FIFA World Cup debutants Cabo Verde in their Group H opener at Atlanta Stadium.
Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed that star wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams were both unavailable to start due to injury, though both were named on the bench.
Spain dominate but struggle to break through
Cabo Verde kicked off proceedings at Atlanta Stadium and immediately set about frustrating the Spanish. Fabián Ruiz tried to drive Spain forward in the early stages, while Pedri had the first real attempt in the seventh minute, shooting from a tight angle on the right side of the box, only for Vozinha to parry comfortably.
Spain enjoyed the lion's share of possession but found Cabo Verde's deep defensive block difficult to penetrate. A corner from Pedri in the 11th minute was cleared without trouble, and the Spaniards lacked the cutting edge to trouble the Cabo Verdean goalkeeper in the opening quarter of an hour.
Yellow card and chances for both sides
Spain continued to probe, with Ruiz firing over from range in the 19th minute after a neat lay-off from Ferrán Torres, before Pau Cubarsí saw his effort from distance deflected wide.
Cabo Verde showed they were no pushover: Steven Moreira had a shot blocked inside the box in the 27th minute, and Jovane Cabral fired over from the edge of the area in the 38th minute. Marc Cucurella and Gavi both had efforts blocked as Spain pressed for the opener.
Torres hits the bar — Vozinha the hero
The match burst into life in the 39th minute when Spain finally created a genuine chance of the highest quality. Cucurella headed a lofted ball across the six-yard box and Torres, arriving at the far post, struck the crossbar from close range. Oyarzabal pounced on the rebound but Vozinha produced a superb save to keep the scores level.
Spain continued to press in the closing stages of the first half. Torres was denied again by Vozinha in the 45th minute, and in added time Aymeric Laporte met a Pedri corner with a firm header, only for the goalkeeper to tip it away brilliantly. The sides went in goalless at the break.
Second half: Spain turn up the pressure
Spain resumed with renewed intent. Mikel Oyarzabal headed narrowly wide early in the second half, and Ruiz continued to test Vozinha with efforts from range, though his accuracy remained inconsistent. Rodri and Pedri kept the ball moving with purpose, and Spain were camped in Cabo Verde's defensive third for long spells.
In the 56th minute, Pedri's cross found Ruiz for a header that Vozinha saved smartly. Cabo Verde made a triple substitution in the 61st minute — Deroy Duarte, Willy Semedo, and Nuno Da Costa all came on — to reinforce their defensive effort.
Yamal and Merino introduced — but Vozinha stands firm
With the game still goalless, Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente turned to his bench in the 71st minute, introducing Lamine Yamal for Gavi and Mikel Merino for Ruiz. Yamal made an immediate impact, driving down the right flank and creating a chance for Torres, who was denied once more by Vozinha.
Merino himself had a good opportunity in the 73rd minute, finding himself in space inside the box after a move involving Marcos Llorente, but Vozinha saved again. Dani Olmo came on for Torres in the 81st minute, and Nico Williams replaced Rodri in the 87th minute, reuniting the famous Spanish wing pairing.
Late drama but no breakthrough
As the clock ticked down, Spain threw everything at Cabo Verde. Cucurella headed wide from close range in the 83rd minute, and Olmo picked out Oyarzabal in the box in the 88th minute, only for his effort to be blocked by Pico. Cabo Verde had their own moment of danger in the 90th minute when Diney Borges met a corner with a firm header, but Unai Simón was equal to it.
Despite five minutes of added time and a flurry of late corners and blocked shots from Yamal and Oyarzabal, Spain could not find the breakthrough. The final whistle confirmed a goalless draw — a remarkable result for Cabo Verde on their World Cup debut.
