Borussia Dortmund have confirmed striker Sebastien Haller is to undergo chemotherapy after examinations revealed a testicular tumour to be malignant.

The tumour was discovered earlier this month after Haller complained of feeling unwell in pre-season training.

The 28-year-old, who has already had one operation as part of the first phase of his treatment, is expected to be out of action for several months.

"Sebastien will now receive the best possible treatment. The chances of recovery are very good," explained BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

"We wish him and his family a lot of strength and optimism and our thoughts are with him during this difficult time.

"We ask the media and fans for their understanding that we will not be releasing any medical details regarding the treatment of Sebastien Haller beyond the information mentioned, neither today nor in the coming months."

Haller joined Dortmund from Ajax in July, after a record-breaking season with the Netherlands' record champions. He finished 2021/22 on an Eredivisie-leading 21 goals, and ended up third in the UEFA Champions League scoring charts behind Karim Benzema (15) and Robert Lewandowski (13), after scoring 11 times during Ajax's run to the round of 16.
