Hamburg snap up defender Sebastiaan Bornauw from Leeds United

Hamburg have added some more Bundesliga experience to their backline ahead of the new season, signing Sebastiaan Bornauw on loan from English Premier League side Leeds United.

The Belgian centre-back joins on a until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, and returns to the German top flight a year after departing Wolfsburg for England.

Bornauw has also represent Cologne in the Bundesliga, making a total of 140 appearances in the division across his time at both clubs. He also has four Belgium caps to his name and adds depth to Hamburg’s defensive ranks ahead of the new season. Bornauw made 12 Premier League appearances for Leeds last season as they secured a 14th-place finish under Borussia Mönchengladbach manager Daniel Farke.

"Sebastiaan is already familiar with the Bundesliga from his previous clubs and brings a special work ethic," said board member for sport Kathleen Krüger. "He exemplifies discipline and professionalism every day and also embodies team spirit, strength of character, and communication skills. His personality makes him a great asset to any locker room and a perfect fit for our team structure. We are confident that he will quickly integrate into our team and warmly welcome Sebastiaan."

The new arrival himself, meanwhile, said, "I was convinced from the very first moment during the talks with HSV because I felt the trust of those in charge. I'm really happy to be here. I like the emotions that surround a traditional club like HSV. As a player, that gives me a lot of energy. The fans can look forward to me always giving my all for my team.

The towering centre-half joins in time for the Red Shorts' Bundesliga opener away to Borussia Dortmund on 29 August.
