Granit Xhaka's Switzerland held by Scotland
Granit Xhaka's Switzerland were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland in their UEFA Championship Group B clash at the RheinEnergieSTADION in Cologne.
Scotland 1-1 Switzerland
Goals: 1-0 McTominay 13' (assist: McGregor), 1-1 Shaqiri 26'
Scotland were looking to bounce back from their chastening 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany in their opening match, and they made a fantastic start by scoring inside the opening 15 minutes. Scott McTominay was the goalscorer, firing home from inside he area despite former Hoffenheim defender Fabian Schär's best efforts on the line. However, the lead was eradicated before the half-hour mark, when Xherdan Shaqiri pounced on a slack Anthony Ralston backpass and curled a stunning first-time effort into the top corner. Dan Ndoye then had a goal chalked off for offside prior to Xhaka testing Angus Gunn with a fierce strike. After the interval, Augsburg forward Rubén Vargas had an attempt saved, before Dan Ndoye missed the target when one-on-one with Gunn. Scotland then hit the post through Grant Hanley as both teams went in search of the win. Ultimately, though, the sides had to make do with a share of the spoils that leaves Switzerland needing only a draw to book their place in the round of 16. Meanwhile, Scotland must beat Hungary to have any chance of progression themselves.
