Schalke hold defending champions Bayern Munich to goalless draw
Promoted Schalke produced a heroic defensive display to deny reigning champions Bayern Munich their second win of the season, with goalkeeper Loris Karius the hero of a goalless draw at the Veltins-Arena.
Schalke hosted Bayern in their first home game in the Bundesliga since May 2023, with head coach Miron Muslić making three changes, which included handing Satoshi Tanaka his Bundesliga debut and bringing Robin Gosens and Junior Dina Ebimbe into the starting XI.
Vincent Kompany, meanwhile, rotated his attack, resting Harry Kane and Michael Olise for Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl.
Karius keeps out Bayern's best effort
Karl fired in the game's first effort inside three minutes, cutting inside from the right and shooting straight at Karius as Bayern set the tempo from the off.
Joshua Kimmich then chipped a neat ball into the box for Aleksandar Pavlović, who laid it off for Nathaniel Brown — only for Karius to fly across his goal and turn the effort behind.
As the half went on, Schalke grew in confidence and began to look dangerous on the counter. After one such break, Adil Aouchiche curled a free-kick towards the top corner, but Manuel Neuer pushed it away.
Luis Díaz then spurned the half's best chance when sent clean through, dragging his effort wide under pressure from Timo Becker.
Kane arrives but Schalke hold firm
Kane replaced Brown at the interval, but Schalke's resistance barely wavered, with the likes of Nikola Katić getting in the way of every ball.
Díaz was played through for a second time, but his lofted finish lacked conviction and was cleared by the retreating Hasan Kuruçay.
Vincent Kompany responded by sending on Olise and Jamal Musiala for Karl and Saibari, immediately sharpening Bayern's play, and for a few minutes Schalke were swimming as Karius denied Olise from a tight angle, and Konrad Laimer sliced wide from close range.
Just when Schalke thought they had weathered the storm, Kane almost produced a stunning 25-yard drive, only for Karius to somehow tip it over the bar, as Schalke battled through for a famous point against the champions, in turn ending Bayern's run of scoring in 59 competitive games in succession.
Man of the Match: Loris Karius
Karius was the standout performer of the evening. He denied Brown early on, saved sharply from Olise on the hour, and then produced a stunning late stop to deny Kane's fierce drive from distance. His saves helped preserve a goalless draw for Schalke and earned him 68 per cent of the Man of the Match vote.
