Key stats
Nagano-born Tanaka developed in the ranks of Shonan Bellmare in the Greater Tokyo area and made his debut at the age of 17 in July 2020 - with current Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Shuto Machino becoming a team-mate the following year.
A season-long loan at Belgian outfit Kortrijk in 2022/23 gave Tanaka some initial experience of European football, with 15 top-flight appearances. Following his return to Japan, he signed for Sanfreece Hiroshima in December 2024 and won the 2025 Japanese Super Cup under former Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt coach Michael Skibbe.
Tanaka swapped Hiroshima for Düsseldorf after a year, signing for second-tier Fortuna in December 2025. He made 13 appearances during the second half of 2025/26, but his club could not avert the agony of relegation on the final day, paving the way for a move to champions Schalke ahead of their return to the Bundesliga in 2026/27.
Tanaka represented Japan at the U17 World Cup in 2019 and made his full international debut in a 2-0 win over China at the East Asian Football Championship in July 2025, providing an assist for their opening goal.

Plays a bit like: Kaishu Sano
Tanaka is a bustling and dependable defensive midfield operator, very much in the mould of countryman Kaishu Sano, who has been an ever-present for Mainz since joining in summer 2024. He might not be a player known for outlandish tricks, but is one fans grow to love due to his sheer commitment.
Did you know?
Although he spent just six months in Düsseldorf, more Bundesliga stars might be familiar with Tanaka than you might suspect. In a March 2023 friendly between the Japan and Germany U21s in Frankfurt, he faced the likes of Noah Atubolu, Jamie Leweling and Angelo Stiller in a keenly contested 2-2 draw.
What they're saying
"Satoshi has exactly the qualities we were looking for in that holding midfield role. He is aggressive without the ball, dynamic and agile, while his work rate and intensity fit our game really well." - Schalke sporting director Youri Mulder
"With Satoshi, we're gaining a combative and technically gifted midfielder who is very comfortable on the ball and who has consistently demonstrated his qualities in Japan. It's no coincidence that he was called up to the Japanese national team for the first time this summer." - Düsseldorf sporting director Sven Mislintat on signing Tanaka in December 2025
