Bayern Munich goalkeeping legend Manuel Neuer talks about 2026/27 treble chances

Legendary Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has spoken about his expectations ahead of 2026/27, which could be the final season of his celebrated playing career.

Neuer told Sky in Germany: "Perhaps all good things will come in threes this time. We've always had the chance to reach the final [of the UEFA Champions League]. We have always been close. I believe we have the quality, the mentality and the tactical cleverness to beat any opponents."

Last season Bayern claimed a sensational Bundesliga and DFB Cup double but were narrowly beaten in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, losing an incredible tie 6-5 on aggregate.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper recently indicated that the 2026/27 season may be his last as a professional footballer, and he again addressed the possibility of retiring next spring, saying: "Nothing is 100 percent certain. It's not set in stone, but the probability is high."

There would be a perfect symmetry if Neuer does bow out lifting the Champions League trophy at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano next June to complete a treble. Since joining Bayern 15 years ago, he has collected the league, cup and European crowns twice in a single season (in 2012/13 and 2019/20).

Neuer confessed to be in good spirits and looking forward to the new campaign, with his "holiday doing him good".

The goalkeeper will get the first chance to add to his bulging personal trophy cabinet when Bayern face Borussia Dortmund in the curtain-raising Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday 22 August (kick-off 8.30pm CEST).

He is then set to captain his side as they seek to retain the Bundesliga (which would be Neuer's 14th league title) with the season-opening clash against VfB Stuttgart on Friday 28 August (kick-off 8.30pm CEST).
