Bayern's official club outlets have confirmed the reason club captain Neuer was replaced by Jonas Urbig at half-time against Bremen on Matchday 22.

Der Rekordmeister revealed the extent of his injury on their official website, stating: "The keeper [Neuer] suffered a torn muscle fibre in his left calf in Saturday’s Bundesliga match at Werder Bremen. This was confirmed by a thorough examination carried out by Bayern’s medical unit."

However, the Munich outfit are yet to outline for how long their shot-stopper will be out of action. In the meantime, 22-year-old stopper Urbig is expected to continue to deputise, having already featured five times for Bayern in the Bundesliga this term.

Urbig joined the side back in January 2025 from Cologne, and has generally been deployed as a second-choice goalkeeper behind 2014 FIFA World Cup winner Neuer. He has also been heralded as the 40-year-old’s eventual successor at Bayern, following some head-turning displays for his new side in the UEFA Champions League.

Coming on during the interval against Bremen, the youngster maintained Neuer's first-half clean sheet, helping his side see out a comfortable 3-0 victory in style at the Weserstadion.

Should Neuer be out several weeks or more, Urbig will likely be in the net for the upcoming Matchday 24 Klassiker instalment between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund at the end of the month.

It’s set to be a crucial few weeks for the Bundesliga leaders, who also face tough tests against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen in what could prove to be a season-defining run of fixtures.

Bayern are currently top of the table, six points clear of Dortmund, who themselves kept pace with the league leaders with an emphatic 4-0 home victory over Mainz on Friday evening.
