Andre Hahn earns Augsburg win as Robin Zentner mistake costs Mainz dearly
Andre Hahn was Augsburg's matchwinner as the Bavarians put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone, after a mistake by Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
Mainz 0-1 Augsburg
Goal: 0-1 Hahn (25')
Rafal Gikiewicz was the busier of the two goalkeepers, making two excellent saves to deny Danny Latza, but it may well have been the lack of action which led Zentner to gift the guests the opening goal. Not under any particular pressure from an opponent, instead of making a clearance or passing to a teammate, the Mainz goalkeeper tapped the ball straight to the feet of Florian Niederlechner, who squared for Hahn to stroke the ball into an open goal. It was Augsburg's one and only shot on target in a first half which had been otherwise largely controlled by the hosts.
Augsburg made a much better start to the second half with a flurry of early chances providing belated justification for their lead, while Mainz were counting their blessings they were just one goal behind. Latza tried his best to bring the hosts level, but could only swing at air as a cross eluded him. An offside flag denied Karim Onisiwo a free run on Gikiewicz's goal, while Jeffrey Gouweleeuw tried his luck from within his own half, as the chances dried up for a more defensive-minded Augsburg. Jean-Paul Boetius was next to test Gikiewicz before Onisiwo went the closest of any Mainz player to scoring, striking the right-hand post only moments after Hahn hit the woodwork at the other end. Two more Onisiwo efforts were turned away by an unbeatable Gikiewicz as Augsburg held on for a win which puts some daylight between them and the relegation zone, while leaving Mainz in 17th place.
