Lionel Messi helps Hamburg’s Nicolas Capaldo fulfil childhood dream

While many footballers were heading off on holiday at the beginning of June, Hamburg’s Nicolas Capaldo was making his Argentina debut against Honduras and training alongside Lionel Messi ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

After helping Hamburg secure Bundesliga survival in 2025/26, Capaldo’s summer got even better with a call-up to Argentina’s World Cup preparation squad. Although the 27-year-old narrowly missed out on the final roster, it was an experience he will never forget.

"It was very special for me to be part of the squad. I’m very grateful to have been given this opportunity", he said. "It really is a dream come true. Playing for the national team is the first thing you dream of as a child."

Capaldo earned his opportunity after an impressive campaign, making 26 Bundesliga appearances as he excelled in both defence and midfield. He also captained Hamburg on several occasions in the absence of Yussuf Poulsen and was given the chance to showcase those qualities on the international stage.

"I had the chance to show what I could do for a few minutes," Capaldo explained. "It doesn’t get any bigger than being part of the reigning world champions."

Although he ultimately missed out on Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad, the experience left a lasting impression.

"Even though I wasn’t in the final squad for the World Cup, I still feel nothing but pride. I trained there with the best footballers. The intensity and quality were so high. It was something very special. I’m following every one of their matches at the World Cup and I’m their biggest fan."

One of the biggest highlights was the chance to train alongside the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer, Lionel Messi, who more than lived up to Capaldo’s expectations.

"He’s the best player in history and has been my idol since I was a child. Just looking at him made me emotional. He always gives his all and works incredibly hard. That inspires everyone. When he works hard, everyone else does too. That’s something I’m taking away from the international tour."
