USMNT starlet Mathis Albert set for more Dortmund minutes
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovač has told the Bundesliga that USMNT sensation Mathis Albert will "get a lot more minutes" with the current league leaders "probably sooner" rather than later.
South Carolina-born Albert made his Bundesliga debut under Kovač in April last season, replacing Gio Reyna as the youngest American to play in the German top flight at the age of 16 years and 340 days.
The now 17-year-old forward, who could have played for France through his father and Germany through his mother, has made just one first-team appearance this term in the DFB Cup first-round win over HEBC Hamburg.
He did, however, make his senior international debut for the USA in the September-October window and surpassed former Dortmund man Christian Pulisic as his country’s youngest all-time goalscorer with a strike in the 4-2 win over Chile on 29 September, aged 17 years and 131 days.
Though that record was broken just four days later by Cavan Sullivan, Kovač expects it to not be the last major landmark in Albert’s career as he continues on the steep upward trajectory he has taken since joining the club from LA Galaxy in 2024.
"[There are] no restrictions," replied Kovač when asked about the limits of the latest Dortmund starlet’s prospects.
"[He is] a very talented young man who is already showing really good signs in training, who has already played a cup game, and who sooner or later, probably sooner, will get a lot more minutes here at BVB than perhaps half a year ago."
The next opportunity could come today when the Black-Yellows put their perfect start to the Bundesliga season on the line against Werder Bremen.
