Late Miro Muheim strike completes Hamburg comeback against ten-man Hoffenheim
Hamburg left it until second-half stoppage-time to pull off a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory away to ten-man Hoffenheim on Matchday 5 courtesy of a last minute strike from substitute hero Miro Muheim, which saw Merlin Polzin's men claim their first win on the road this campaign.
Hoffenheim 2-3 Hamburg
Goals: 0-1 Poulsen 12’, 1-1 Bournauw 45’+6 (o.g.), 2-1 Conté 53’ (assist: Asllani), 2-2 Moffi 83’ (assist: Muheim), 2-3 Muheim 90’+4
Red card: Bernardo 65’
Hamburg travelled to the PreZero Arena having made four changes from their win over Cologne, with Martin Adeline, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Yussuf Poulsen and 17-year-old Louis Lemke, two days after his birthday, all coming into the side.
Hoffenheim also rotated, with Bernardo, Tim Lemperle and Fisnik Asllani handed starts, the latter making his first appearance of the season.
Poulsen punishes slow Hoffenheim start
Hamburg made the stronger start and took the lead in the twelfth minute. Albert Sambi Lokonga's free-kick from the right found Nicolás Capaldo, whose deflected effort cannoned off the post straight to Yussuf Poulsen, who reacted quickest to tap home.
Hoffenheim struggled to find a way through a well-organised Hamburg defence for long periods, with Lemperle twice denied, once by Daniel Heuer Fernandes, and the other by the VAR, which correctly ruled out an apparent equaliser due to an offside infringement.
Bornauw turns it into his own net
Hoffenheim rallied strongly before the break. A Bambasé Conté effort was initially ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up, but deep into stoppage time, Vladimír Coufal's corner caused chaos.
Lemperle's header on the end of it was initially saved by Heuer Fernandes, but Asllani kept the ball alive, and under pressure, Bornauw turned it into his own goal to ensure the scores were level at the interval.
Conté fires Hoffenheim ahead
Hoffenheim carried their momentum into the second half and took the lead not long after the restart. In the 53rd minute, Asllani laid the ball off to Conté roughly 30 yards from goal, who cut inside and curled a low shot in off the inside of the far post.
However, the hosts celebrations would be short-lived when Bernardo, already booked for a tactical foul on David Møller Wolfe, was shown a second yellow for a late challenge on the same player, forcing Hoffenheim to try and hold their one-goal advantage with a man short for the majority of the second half.
Moffi and Muheim complete the turnaround
Hamburg, with fresh legs from Terem Moffi, Kofi Amoako and Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit, pushed for an equaliser. Otto Stange thought he had levelled in the 80th minute, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review for a handball in the build-up.
Three minutes later Moffi made it count, heading home Miro Muheim's cross for his first goal in HSV colours to make it 2-2. Hoffenheim almost held on, with Oliver Baumann denying Fábio Vieira a clear chance in the closing minutes, but deep into stoppage time, Robin Hranáč's header fell to Muheim on the edge of the box, whose subsequent first-time strike flew into the bottom corner to win it 3-2 for Hamburg.
Man of the Match: Yussuf Poulsen
Yussuf Poulsen was voted Man of the Match with 43 per cent of the vote. He opened the scoring in the 12th minute, reacting first to the rebound off Capaldo's deflected effort to give Hamburg an early lead.
