RB Leipzig end Hamburg’s unbeaten streak with comeback victory
For the first time in 2025/26, RB Leipzig came from behind to win with goals from Rômulo and Yan Diomande inflicting Hamburg a first defeat at the Volksparkstadion since October.

Hamburg welcomed Leipzig to the Volksparkstadion with both teams experiencing contrasting fortunes in this second half of the season. The hosts were unbeaten in their last six matches - a feat only matched by Borussia Dortmund - and had opened up a six-point cushion over the relegation zone.
Leipzig, meanwhile, had been struggling, collecting just nine points from their last seven games, with their defence keeping only one clean sheet in that time. Most concerningly for the visitors, they had failed to win any match after falling behind this season.
The hosts started brightly, with Damion Downs forcing a fingertip save from Maarten Vandevoordt after 11 minutes. Hamburg suffered an early setback when Nicolas Capaldo limped off with an apparent thigh injury, but they didn't let that disrupt their momentum.
Midway through the half, Fábio Vieira gave Hamburg the lead with a composed finish from William Mikelbrencis's cutback. It was the Portuguese midfielder's fourth goal of the season, with three coming in his last five appearances.
Leipzig responded well to going behind and created several chances through Antonio Nusa and Christoph Baumgartner. Their persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Rômulo produced a moment of magic to level the score.
After Castello Lukeba delivered a diagonal ball that Ridle Baku cushioned across the box, the Brazilian striker finished with an audacious backheel that left Daniel Heuer Fernandes with no chance as both teams went into the break on level terms.
Leipzig started the second half with intent and took just five minutes to find what would prove to be the winning goal. After intercepting a misplaced pass, Diomande linked up with Brajan Gruda before firing a powerful shot into the top corner, leaving Heuer Fernandes with no chance.
The goal marked a significant moment for Leipzig, putting them on course for their first comeback win of the season.
Ole Werner's side had an opportunity to extend their lead shortly after the half-hour mark when they were awarded a penalty after the ball struck Nicolai Remberg's hand during a corner kick. However, Rômulo was denied from the spot by a brilliant save from Heuer Fernandes, who dived low to his right to push the ball away.
Despite the penalty miss, Leipzig remained in control for much of the second half. The Saxony club's defensive organisation proved too strong, with Willi Orbán marshalling the backline effectively despite receiving an early yellow card.
A late free-kick from Luka Vušković sailed harmlessly over the bar, and Leipzig comfortably saw out the six minutes of added time to secure all three points.
Man of the Match: Daniel Heuer Fernandes
Despite ending up on the losing side, Heuer Fernandes was deservedly named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance between the posts for Hamburg.
The Portuguese-German goalkeeper made a series of important saves throughout the contest, none more crucial than his penalty stop to deny Rômulo in the 62nd minute. This was his second penalty save of the season, having previously denied Andrej Ilić of Union Berlin on Matchday 5.
Heuer Fernandes also made a spectacular point-blank save from Rômulo in the first half and commanded his area with authority throughout.
